Hello!

In a few years time I’d like to take the family on an overseas holiday. Our kids will be approx, 12, 10 and 6 years old. We will be on a tight budget, have never been OS before, any recommendations on where to go and why?

  • I’d try New Zealand or somewhere like Noumea.

  • Cruising to and from Fiji and nearby islands can be tricky because of cyclones which occur frequent.
There may be detours and you miss areas you really wanted to see. Cyclones can cause cancellation of on land excursions. One was cancelled when I was on a cruise. A cyclone had virtually flattened most of the structures and natural habitation on the island.
Friends went to NZ on a cruise and had a fantastic time.

  • Lucky you’ve given yourself a few years to save up because it will cost an absolute fortune

  • We never took our kids overseas we could not afford it but I hope it all works out for you and you have a lovely family holiday.

  • Fiji without a doubt. I’ve been 15 times! Go outside peak period and you will get good airfares. Contact resort direct for. Prices then get your agent to do one to compare

  • Bali would be very cheap

  • We went to Vietnam when my daughter was 3 and again when she was 5. Everything was unbelievably cheap and it was a great experience. We stayed in guest houses that cost between $10 and $15 a night for an airconditioned room with 2 double beds, fridge, and private bathroom, plus breakfast.

  • I’ve never been to Fiji but I heard a lot of people saying its great family holiday location.

  • we just got back from a cruise with a group of friends. Within the group we had children aged from 13 – 4 and we all had a great time. Kids clubs where really good at different ages and reasonable price for OS trip

  • Yeah I just noticed that over 12’s have to pay for most things extra so it looks like we’ll be going when the kids are 11,9 & 5.

  • Fiji is fantastic with awesome kids clubs in most hotels, but the cruise idea is definitely one to look into as most activities are included I have taken my older 2 boys there when they were 3 & 5 y.o. NZ is awesome also I did the fly drive in a motorhome and that was so much fun and plenty to check out that doesn’t cost much at all if anything – Do research before going on what things there are to do free. Check out the airlines to because sometimes the age of a child stops at 11/12 and you will have to pay adult fares for that child :-(

  • Thanks for your great answers so far…Bali, Fiji, New Zealand, A cruise and Singapore….wow, I’m going to have to do some research!!

  • Singapore! That’s whee we are hoping to go next year. So much to do with kids and super safe and friendly. Universal studios is now open on Sentosa Island too I can’t wait to go!

  • It depends on what you call a tight budget, but l would suggest a cruise, once on board all meals and entertainment are paid for, except things like ice creams from the ice creamy etc .They have dedicated children clubs operating all day everyday some even have special sittings for children at dinner. There are so many activities on board to keep them occupied and at night there are discos and best of baby sitting services, iam not sure if you pay for those or not .we have done 17 cruises not with children but I have watched and the children and parents have a ball.we went mainly around the South Pacific as you get the best deals.

  • New Zealand for sure look out for flights and car hire deals, north island there is so much to see ,and the driving distance between isn’t that far, plus we got really cheap accomadation at mainly 4 and 5 star motels, you can even do a motor home holiday if you wanted to as they often do flights and motor home rental deals
