Hello!

Hello, my 16 mth old daughter cannot see me sit relaxing doing nothing or just watching tv. She will never leave me alone. She will jump on my lap and start open my clothes and start sucking. At home and in public. I’m trying to stop breastfeeding now. How can I stop her from doing that? Any tips or suggestions? Thank you in advance

  • just use distraction and offer a drink in a cup, it would also be a comfort thing so she needs to know its still ok to have cuddles with mummy without that.

  • Sometimes you just have to be strict and tell her No. It’s never easy to wean but try to distract her and give her something else to eat or drink.

  • Thats the stage when I stopped breast feeding. I weaned him onto half cows milk half water. But he would listen sometimes when I told him no and explained that it was not time for that.

  • Tell her no and offer her a drink

  • Everytime my daughter tried that, I would tickle her and distract her

  • You have to be firm and also distract her. Give her something crafty to do when she would usually be feeding.

  • it sounds like she hungry offer some food when she tries get feed

  • Try distracting her by not letting her on your lap. Play with toys on the floor and slowly over the weeks get up and do something else in the room for a few moments and then make that time longer and longer. She just may need you because she’s changing from a baby into a toddler.

  • Its is hard but a firm No and give her something else (maybe a rusk or her sippy cup)

  • its really hard to simply say no and shut up shop as shes not going to understand at all.
Reading some of the responses here i think that might be the way to go in trying to make it her choice to stop.
I stopped feeding my eldest at around 14mths, my 2nd at 12mths and my 3rd decided herself that she didnt want to know anymore at 9mths….that was a bit of a shock.

  • I put some lemon juice on my nipple and when my 18mo old daughter tasted it, she was surprised and i said oh i think mummy’s milk has turned sour. She just smiled and looked a bit embarassed and she never asked for it again :)

  • I hope it will work out eventually. I am also in need of this solution soon :(

  • Perhaps you try gently but firmly explaining that right now is mummy’s time to watch t.v/sit/bath etc but she can have boobies/playtime or whatever when it’s over?

  • Yeah thats a tricky one, you possibly just have to be firm and say no and offer a substitute ‘big girl’ drink

  • maybe time to tell her no and give her a bottle
