Hello!

What should I bring to a mum in hospital after giving birth?
“Hi, a non mum here wondering what on earth I should take to my best friend in hospital after giving birth. I’d love to know what people bought you and what you wanted or would want. Do I take books? food? fruit? flowers.. stuff for the baby or stuff for her? Help mums… you know best and I am really stuck on what to take her as I know magic sleep tokens aren’t an option! I look forward to hearing your answers. Jane x”

  • Honestly I didn’t want anything brought to me in hospital because that was just more stuff I had to take home. People brought baby clothes and blankets which couldn’t be used anyway because they weren’t washed. I got gifted flowers (which I loved) but they were bloody awkward to pack. I didn’t have time for a book or anything like that. I barely used my phone. I packed everything in my hospital bag that I needed, if I needed more I had it packed at home ready for my partner to bring.
I’d suggest saving the gifts till they’re home.

  • I received flowers and loved them.

  • I would have loved something for me – a book (even if it would be months before I got to read it), or a small keepsake like inexpensive baby themed earrings or a photo frame.

  • A mothers survival kit add some chocolate, pads for after birth, lifesavers add a funny touch to the hamper. Panadol and face wipes.

  • Flowers are beautiful and a lovely gesture.

  • Don’t take flowers to the hospital, you get so many and it’s hard to transport, save them for when she’s home. Something nice for her though, even just chocolates or slmethinf

  • Magazines, food treats but something healthy like a punnet of strawberries would be nice.

  • The best present I received was a pamper pack!

  • I loved anything at all, magazines are great just for that quiet break.

  • Take the new mum a dressing gown, it will come in handy for those night feeds :)

  • Making up a fruit basket for mum sounds great. For the bub, I would buy baby products and build it up over the 9 months. make it up as a basket. they will never get wasted believe me.

  • Just had a g/f have a baby and we took her all the stuff she couldnt face while pregnant, like soft cheese and salami, we made her a “picnic” plate she loved it

  • My favourite thing has been getting a platter of foods that I couldn’t eat while I was pregnant, like sushi and soft cheese, and topped off with an iced coffee shake. Anything that indulges mum is great and if you can get a little keepsake for bub like a hand print mould or rattle then that covers both sides for you.

  • stuff for mum the baby will get heaps fruit magazines maybe a nice hair brush and ties even her fav chocolate or lollies

  • I really appreciated magazines, something that I could read an article here and there but not as involving as the novel I had taken in with me. When I got home was when I appreciated bady stuff and flowers. They are nice to get when you are in hospital bhut they are not really needed there and they are just more to take home with you. I remember trying to stuff all these things into the car when I went home after my first child. It was such a nightmare and we were so worried about having the baby capsule in properly. Visit your friend with some mags and tell her that you’ll see her when she gets home with a gift for baby.
