Hello!

I’m seeing that my nails are becoming brittle. I have very strong nails otherwise, and its the first time I’m seeing this. Is it because of the chlorine content in water (while washing) or some vitamin deficiency. I plan to visit my GP if not resolved soon.

  • Brittle nails occur for a variety of reasons. They may be a normal sign of aging or the result of polishing your nails too frequently. When the weather is cold, brittle nails may result from dryness. Weak nails also can be signs of a health issue, such as hypothyroidism or anemia.
A deficiency in B-complex vitamins, especially biotin, will produce ridges along the nail bed. – A diet lacking in calcium contributes to dry, brittle nails. – A lack of folic acid and vitamin C can lead to hangnails. – Insufficient dietary essential oils, like omega-3, cause cracking..
Make sure you eat a good and nutritious diet.

  • Mine are breaking easy as well as having ridges on them. I just put it down to menopause

  • I would see a doctor if this hasn’t happen before, best of luck!

  • I have very brittle nails esp. since I stopped taking my multi-vitamins

  • lol reading this first comment, my nails got really good during pregnancy so i can only put it down to eating a great diet. gets lots of vitamin d and eat lots of calcium foods. Be careful of bleaching things without gloves as this will weaken your nails.

  • I think you are on the right track with a GP visit. If you are feeling run down you could be lacking in something. There is a Blackmores Vitamin that you could take called Hair Skin and Nails, and I think the Swisse range have a couple of options. In the meantime there are topical preparations you could use like Dr Lewins Nail formula ( can’t remember the exact name), it has a superb reputation for helping strengthen nails. There are a couple of other brands as well

  • Not really to sure on that all i know is when i was pregnant i said good bye to nice nails. I have been at time told by the doctor i am lacking some vitamins so it might be a good reson to go get tested and find out whats causing it so you can get your lovely nails back.
