Hello!

My son is 4 and went for about 6 months without bed wetting, but now he wetting his bed so much we’ve reverted back to night nappies. I know he’s only 4 so we’re not overly concerned, but am after any idea/tips to assist in the nappy free nights again. We’ve been stopping drinking from about 6pm, make him go to the toilet before he goes to bed and even started taking him to the toilet when we were going to bed around 10.30 and still he would have a wet nappy in the morning or when nappy free, wet the bed 1 to 2 times.

  • My son did the same and regularly wet his bed till he was 12yrs old. Like you we reduced his liquid intake after a certain time and had him going to the toilet before he went to bed and before we went to bed. I stopped with night nappies after age 4/5 or so and just gave him a clean bed when he had an accident. It’s not uncommon for boys and I believe the less you’re making it a problem, the less problem it is. Make sure that when you reduce the liquid intake after a certain time, to increase it during the day.

  • First, take your son to the doctor to test for bladder infection, as this may be causing the problem.
If he doesn’t have an infection, stop him drinking earlier – around 4pm – and take him to the toilet at 6pm, and before his bedtime, as well as continuing your habit of taking him to the toilet when you go to bed.

Add to this a calendar, where he is encouraged to mark all his DRY days with a marker pen in his favourite colour, so he can see his successes.
Each month, count his dry days, and praise him for trying so well.

If he begins to gradually improve over the following months, again, praise him for how well he is doing.

Most of all, be patient, and never criticise him for those days he does wet his bed. I’m sure he isn’t happy about it either, especially after his previous success.

  • I take my son to the toilet before I go to bed at around 10:30. He doesn’t really wake up. I put him on the toilet and he is so funny as he is half asleep. He does a wee and then goes back to bed. I have been doing this since he was 2 and he is now nearly 5 and the only time e have accidents is when he is sick

  • make sure that he has a night light etc. maybe he just doesn’t fully wake and pees because he is just in that state of drowsiness. I think that basically using nappies/pull ups will help him sleep through the night, help you avoid laundry piles- but he should feel the wetness so that he will learn to wake up and go and pee. He will not want to lay in a puddle of cold pee and it will trigger him to get up. Maybe you will get lucky and he only pees a little before fully waking up. Just protect the mattress as well as you can. I haven’t had this issue yet but my friend has a 7 year old who has started peeing her bed again because she dreams that she is peeing and all the while, actually is peeing. Don’t stress and he will get better at this again. Be gentle and firm that he needs to go to the toilet when he feels like it and try not to hold on until the morning. Maybe his bed is just too comfy lol Hope that this helps a little. Tell him that it’s ok to have an accident and try not to pressure him.

  • My five year old done the same thing. Pull ups beats the stress and mess!! They’re not going to be doing it at fifteen, so don’t panic!! Try eliminating drinks from after a set time and wake them for toilet at eleven for the built up bladder. I prefer the pull up and when dry a few nights in a row I’ll try just her knickers again.
