Hello!

Where can I find help on choosing a career? I really don’t know what I want to do with my life. I’m a mum of two, who’s been out of the workforce for nearly 4 years, I’ve worked in administration roles for ten years but that’s not necessarily what I want to do forever. I’m considering study while still working part time.

  • Find something you like doing and wouldn’t mind doing everyday for the rest of your life and try and find something in that field.

  • How did you go finding a new career?

  • You could check out courses at your local TAFE.

  • This is such a personal decision. Work out what field you’d like to be in and then go from there.

  • Firstly, find your passion. There’s no point studying something if you’re not sure you’ll stick with it and enjoy it.

  • Aged care & community services is always an excellent career choice.
Benefits yourself and the local community :)

  • What are your interests? I am currently studying in something I never thought I would… a Diploma of Beauty Therapy. I got into it because I rather like art, and I like doing fine detail ect… so thought make-up would be a good career to get into. Also I love helping people, and thinking it would be a good thing to be able to add to a mothers group pamper day we have once a year and also help some friends get a little pampering that can fully afford it…

  • Studying to get the qualifications for the job you want is a good move when you are a mum.

  • Yes what are you interested in or passionate as this really will help you make decisions!

  • It may be a good investment to see a career counsellor – check the yellow pages.

  • TAFE NSW runs a series of courses that are designed for women to retrain and re-enter the workforce or continue further study. They are put in with the TAFE Outreach programs – I would contact your local TAFE and discuss it. You can also do Open Foundation and similar at university designed for people who haven’t studied for a while or don’t know what they want to do .Other than that you are able to register with government job search providers who may be able to offer some advice. I would look at what you like to do in your spare time and think of ways you can incorporate that into a job.

  • I’m at the same point myself, looking to re enter the workforce but not sure that I want to stick to the type of work I’ve done up until now. Would love to complete a uni course but what interests me has an completion time of fours years and Ideally I’d like to be contributing to the household much sooner than that. Thinking of starting up my own business but nervous..scared to take that jump as well.

  • It sounds like it could be worth going to a university
/TAFE open day. They have information about all of their courses as well as career guidance counsellors who can help you work through some of your options, depending on skills and interest.
There is also Open Learning, which is an online uni, I am sure that they would have career counsellors you could talk to by phone or email.
I studied part time and worked art time from the for a year after my daughter was born finishing a law degree. I have to say that it felt insanely hard at the time. I am really glad I did it now and I love my job but try to choose carefully as the courses cost a lot of money so you need to be pretty sure.
I hope some of this helps.
Best of luck and go for it!

  • what are you interested in or passionate for? what are your hobbies? is there anyway that you can get work in regards to these things or go to uni to further yourself.

  • What do you love doing? what is your passion?
You can do online quizzes that may help with some direction
