Hello!

How can I get my toddler to eat? Looking for advice please – I have a 15 month old daughter who is obviously on solids now. She was doing fine up to a week or so ago and now she is reluctant to eat anything unless it is yoghurt or chips etc. Junk food practically. At first it was only me (mum) that she wouldn’t eat for but now it is the whole family. I have even tried taking her to her grandparents to see if she will eat for them being someone else but no… I don’t want to keep feeding her sugar/preservative filled foods as she goes hypo but I don’t want her starving herself either only to survive on milk. Help please. No negative comments as I only want to help my baby girl. Thanks in advance.

  • Make sure she has not got a sore mouth or throat, may be get her checked out by a doctor. If there is no problem just keep offering her healthy food.

  • Be prepared for this to get more frustrating before it gets better, if you are aware that this is going to be hard you’ll be better equipped to deal with it. First thing is first, do not offer her any junk food, no matter how long it has been between meals. Talk to your family and get them in board too. A united approach will make this much easier.

Second if she does not eat don’t give her a bottle as she will just learn that if she doesn’t eat she can just have a bottle. You do need to give her fluids still but don’t make it juice or cordial, that will only make the situation worse.

When she doesn’t eat and then displays hunger offer her the same food back. It is about teaching her that she needs to eat what she is given not what she wants. If we all let our kids jyst eat what they want they will all just live on junk food.

I know that not everyone will agree with this method but it’s one of those times as a mother you have to put your foot down and be cruel to be kind. You will have to put up with a couple of days of tantrums and you may feel nasty but when they are hungry enough they will eat (you just have to get through that layer of stubborn first).

  • following. toddlers are renowned for poor eating, and junk food. can you give a mulit vit supplement or formula? make food fun helps. they love the pouch food too

  • there are some good comments here

  • It’s possibly just a phase, no child will ever starve themselves though, I’m lucky my son was always a good eater, here’s to hoping his sister is just as easy!

  • How are they going now?

  • On know its hard, but just keep persevering

  • it is hard to persevere through these stages but if you keep offering she will eventually get back on track

  • How is she going with food now?

  • i hope it went well

  • How are you going with it now?

  • If she is hungry she will let you know and if she is really hungry she will eat and just try to give her as much healthy options as possible

  • I feel your pain. The pead said she wouldn’t trace so I just kept offering healthy good food and cut out all junk or not so nutritious. Her issue was about independence and not wanting help. My second child is also going through a version of this, he just doesn’t want me to do anything for him.

  • Don’t stress that she will starve… She won’t, as long as you are offering her healthy food. Eventually she will give in and eat it. Often it starts with teething, or something similar and then bad habits and manipulation (not malicious of course) can occur,

  • This is a difficult one. I would serve up a meal on a plate that has separate portions and put a selection of foods that you would like her to eat for lunch/dinner and then just one thing that you know she will eat (yoghurt etc). That way you know she won’t go hungry but may try some of the other foods. This worked with my daughter.
