Hello!

Does your school provide class lists at the end of a year for the following year, or just prior to school commencing? We have had both, and both have pros and cons. Which do you prefer and why?

  • Usually last week of term 4

  • just on a board on the first day back at school.

  • Our school does it the last week of Nov then the kids have 3 transition days in Dec where they all go into the next years class, this also includes the new preps coming to the school.

  • Our school notifies of class allocation in the last week of school, when the report cards come home. That tells us the teacher and the class, but not the other students in that class. There’s a bit of fun with the kids working out which friends might be with them the following year, but not the dread of who else might be. Our old school used to wait until day one back at school. I found this a bit more chaotic trying to find the right class room for the kids among the other kids also wandering around trying to find the right room. As a parent, I prefer knowing who the teacher is going to be ahead of time.

  • Had both – before and after.

  • I find it easier to get them at the end of the previous year, that way I can get what I need a bit at a time and save money along the way.

  • My sons school provided the book last at the beginning of the last term of school! They were registered with an online book provider but of course you end up paying more for the convenience. I am going to shop around. The back to school catalogues start very shortly so I should be able to get a good deal

  • Even before you know what children are going to be in the same class as yours, you can write a letter stating which other child you do / don’t want to be in the same class……and the reasons why.
I know of one case where one child was shy, the other boisterous and it brought out the best results from both of them. The Mums of both children discussed it and agreed so they both sent letters to the school…..a few days apart. Their requests were granted. In another case one child was bullying and harrassing theirs so they applied for their child to be in a different class. Not sure of the outcome for that one.

  • We get the name of the teacher in the last week of school, and parents figure out class lists (more or less) from that. I like it, it lets me prepare my kids for who will or won’t be in their class.

  • When report cards go home in term 4, our students receive the name of their teacher and the class list.

  • We always find out on the first day back. I don’t think it matters either way.

  • We get our class and teachers name with our report cards that are sent on the last day of school. I like being able to prep my child in advance for the next year so they are aware of their class!

  • The second last day of school my kids find out which teachers they will be getting for the following year but we don’t see the list of kids until the first day of school. My kids love asking their friends which teacher they are getting.

  • In primary school my daughter never knew in which class she was and which classmates she had, till the first day of school. The class list was then handed out later in term 1, by the teacher or the class representatives.

  • We just find out which class our child is in two days before school ended, thats all until the first day of school where the lists are posted in the window of the class. Its up to the child to ask around to see who is in their class. Although i have found out there is one child in my sons class that i wish wasnt. . ( the other child plays up in class all the time and my son gets really angry at him so it effects his school work. so she might need to keep them on different tables etc. but that is something that i will point out if it starts up again next year). I think if people find out who is in the class a lot of parents would complain expecting the lists to be changed. But i see it as a growing experience for the kids to learn to deal with people they don like and to deal with making new friends…
