  • I’ve found it takes a long time, but keeping it moist and warm helps, as does adding some dirt, horse/animal pooh, to kick start some of the decay. I’m transitioning to a new compost area that is basically going to be 2 piles. One that is ‘maturing’ and the other that I’m adding to. I plan to turn over the maturing pile and make sure it is decaying nicely, along with following posts like this for more tips!

  • I’m learning also but it can take months to break down and that is if you have the right ratios of product. I didn’t have enough paper product in mine or moisture to help the process along .. so I’ve been adjusting as I go along .. I spoke to a guy at a garden centre and pointed me in the right direction.

  • Some things take longer to decompose than others do. We have discovered there is leaves that don’t decompose for several months. Leaves from some plants are not suitable for composting. I suggest you get professional advice. I notice somebody has put a suggestion of a link to read. If you live near a reputable garden centre staff may be able to advise you.

  • Have you got instructions with your compost bin? That should explain things. You sometimes need to add lime or something similar, some need turning or digging over regularly. It takes months for compost to be garden ready

  • Maybe look up and join a free online gardening site for tips and ideas on composting.

  • Composting and composting bins require attention – a compost pile needs to be turned or tumbled depending on the type of compost bin. It can take months for compost to be ready for the garden.
