Most breastfeeding mothers can consume a moderate amount of caffeine (eg a few cups of coffee or tea each day) without it affecting their babies. Newborn babies however can be particularly sensitive to caffeine. This is because it can take a newborn baby a long time (ie half-life of 50–100 hours) to process caffeine.
I know a 5 month old baby who was very upset and wonder settle for a few hours after her Mum ate Eggplant. It was visiting and we resorted to walking up and down the passage for what seemed to be hours. It seemed as though the movement helped and she would sleep a little bit while we did that. We rubbed her tummy as well as her back as one theory is you can sometimes “feel” the tightness of the wind in their stomach.
Anything you consume transfers into the milk but it’s the same as when you were pregnant. Ie some babies born to mothers that had really excessive caffeine intake can have withdrawals after birth. Generally a couple of cups of coffee is ok though. If you had coffee in pregnancy I would think it’s ok when they are born (i assume theyd be used to it). A friend did an experiment where she cut things out (tea, coffee etc) to see if it had an impact and it didn’t. If you try keep us updated as I’d be interested to know
