Hello!

I was given a lot of second hand stuff, like a cot, bedding, toys. But I wanted a new pram. Some people want new stuff so they know where it has been. Others are happy to save money and use pre-used items. What do other mums think?

  • Both! More for our second we were open it too. But second hand cot in new condition eg.

  • Some of the clothes for my bub were hand me downs but our pram and stuff were all new.
I don’t mind with clothes if I know the person but probably not toys as got don’t know who has handled it and how clean they are as babies constantly put things in their mouth.

  • I love op shopping and bought a few things second hand but purchased the big items like prams, cots and car seats brand new so I knew they were safety compliant.

  • Mostly new, but there were also a lot of items given to me by my extended family that I happily accepted.

  • Both. Save where you can as there are many expenses with raising children. obviously do what is comfortable for you.

  • save your money. they are so expensive, that if you are given something for free, grab it with both hands!

  • We used a combination of hand me downs and new things.

  • Many buy good quality baby equipment but buy a new cot mattress. It is illegal to sell second hand baby carseats, capsules etc. However you may be able to buy one what is still in its unsealed carton. Anything you buy secondhand must be able to be thoroughly washed / cleaned. That includes furniture, toys and clothing. You may find a highchair privately but not at a charity op. shop because of the fabric used to cover the seats of some. I tried to get a secondhand one for occasional use and that was the explanation I was given by a few shops

  • With my first, we bought everything new, but we didn’t know anyone that had used baby stuff….so not much of a choice. With our second, everything (bar clothes, one was a boy, one a girl) was second hand from the first. Pre loved is ok, just check its in good condition and give it a good clean

  • I bought second hand when I could for furniture. But I love my baby carriers and do a LOT of baby wearing, so I bought my Tulas brand new.
If the baby items are in good condition, and cheaper than brand new, go for it!

  • I used a lot of my sisters stuff. But I suppose I knew where that’d been. I don’t go buying preloved from shops.

  • We had a combination. We bought secondhand cot off someone we knewSocar seat and pram were new as we’re the car seat.. Friends gave cot sheets. family gave some second hand toys. It was great

  • Since money was tight we got a lot of pre-loved items from friends and relatives and new stuff was gifted like the cot mattress. The only thing we bought new was the car seat. Absolutely nothing wrong with pre-loved cot, pram and clothes. We just gave everything a good wash.

  • We had a bit of both. Most of the 2nd hand stuff was from family members anyway so we didn’t have the ‘don’t know where it’s been’ feeling.

  • yep get a new car seat, pram and breast pump! I got second hand nursery furniture but good quality boori
