I’m looking at getting a large ham this Christmas but am a bit worried about having leftovers. I have seen but never used calico ham bags, do they work?

  • they work really well just keep moist so your ham dosent dry out. don’t forget ham also freezes well so just freeze any excess

  • They’re no better then an old pillow case. Soak it in a mixture of vinegar and water, rinse and repeat regularly, will help your ham last

  • My mum always dampens the bag with a little vinegar and then refer this every few days to keep the bag moist and it lengthens the life of the ham.

  • These bags definitely increase the life of the ham. You do need to regularly rinse them in a mix of vinegar and water. And 2 would be handy so you can wash them too.

  • yes they do, you have to keep them damp, and wash them every few days or they smell. Hey a cotton pillow case is just as good though

  • They do work but you do need to regularly (every couple of days), rinse your bag and rewet it with a dliuted vinegar mix. It helps keep the meat moist and fresh. Yum – my mouth is watering!

  • Yes they work you just need to wet the bag in a 50/50 solution of water and white vinegar squeeze out the excess liquid so the bag is damp. Place ham inside and in the fridge and repeat ever 3-4 days or when the bag feels dry. The ham stays lovely and moist. ( won’t taste like vinegar either).

  • I have heard that they work.

  • yes, they do always used them when i was growing up.

  • The ham will gradually dry in a calico bag, but not near as quickly as it would otherwise.
You can slice and freeze some in airtight containers or freezer bags. The slices will stick together unless you put go-betweens or even just baking paper between them. You can also dice up ham to use on top of pizzas or in other recipes later In some cases you can use it instead of bacon. One year we didn’t have a calico bag so we wrapped it in a thick tea towel.

  • i used them for a couple of years, but i think the ham dries out in them so now i cut up all the ham put in the fridge what i want and freeze the rest.
