Hello!

I’m wondering if I need to pack some nappies in my hospital bag and whether the newborn size will be OK for my new arrival. What did other mums pack?

  • In general yes ! My first was unexpected born 10 wks early with a weight of 880 grams. In her case they were provided by the hospital where she stayed for 8.5 wks. They were so little, I wouldn’t know where to get such tiny nappies

  • The hospital used to hand out lists of the things you needed to include when you went to ante natel classes

  • Yes, we did. So far as I’m aware the vast majority of hospitals require you to take your own. Of course it’s always worth checking with the individual hospital.

  • Depends on your hospital. We had to.

  • DOnt go over the top with nappies, take a sleeve and if you need more then someone can bring you up some!

  • You definitely need to pack nappies. I don’t think hospitals supply any as they only keep some for emergency cases. Newborns will be just fine.

  • Yes. Newborn size should be fine. You should pack everything that you think your baby may need and prepare the bag for up to 3 days just in case as that is about how long you will stay if you need to have a caesarean for any reason. So breast pads, sanitary pads, nappies, a couple of outfits- warm things as it will be cold in the hospital, as well as cooler things for when you finally get outside, snacks for you and your partner- lollies are good for labour as they help keep your energy levels up. A heat pack for labour is good too. A couple of changes of clothes for yourself and PJ’s.

  • I did, I brought along the newborn ones.

  • Hey there mum to be!
The hospital especially if a public one will only supply usually the very first nappy after birth. Take with you at minimum 12 nappies. ( if you are there longer family or a friend I am sure will dip out to grab some more for you). The next question? What size and brand? I personally with my 1st bub used huggies newborn. However moved to a few cheaper ones like kmart brand as they were the only ones that fit bub due to him being an early bub and very small!( the only nappies that fit at the time).
The next time around which is 3 mths from now though I will be using the aldi brand new born ones at $4.29 for 28 and come in an easy little pack that will fit perfect in the hospital bag, not to mention I am In love with this brand and have never had a problem since changing bub to this brand at 6 mths old he is now 2 years old.
But all bubs sizes and shapes are different and it is a matter of trial and error and what works for you.
Hopefully I helped with some insight! Also samples are great to have a bunch of, if you have the time send off to some companies and ask.
1 or 2 nappies from each also helped guide me on the best path for what worked best!
    Best wishes!

  • Yes I would bring a pack of newborn size and some size up.

  • I gave birth in a public hospital. You will need to pack at least 6 nappies per day for however many days you are in hospital. I would pack mostly newborn nappies and maybe 3 of the next size up. That way you have a few in case your baby is bigger than average until you can get someone to go out and grab you some more.

  • No. We did and the hospital made us use their cloth ones. They don’t like you to use disposables I hospital s they soak up the wee and they like to see how much wee your baby is doing so they will give you cloth nappies…well, that’s what happened at rpa.

  • My son is 5 now but I remember that I never packed nappies and within 20 minutes after giving birth the head nurse was at my bedside asking me if friends or family could bring some in… I was shocked as my other children were born years before but nappies were not a issue, Other suggestions are nighties ( I found the pjs with pants awkward as I had to go the toilet several times and also get checkups from doc and nurses) Also a thats life and take 5 to read and do puzzles and toiletries… my other suggestion would be pen and paper for records.. My mum recorded all visitors, what each vistor brought as a gift, My first bath, feed, nappychange. I really treasure looking back at that information :))

  • I had to, your hospital will advise if you need nappies.

  • Depends on the size of your baby generally they will give you a rough size of bubs but get newborn and infant just in case my boy was in premie nappies (2.5 kg) when he was born and my nephew was in nearly crawlers (5.4 kg)
