  • Its not only your kids that need preparing for high school you too have to adapt to the big change High School brings and its a big change from primary

  • Usually schools will hold orientation days which are so important to help children adjust. Also often times schools will arrange for older children to be a buddy to the younger students.

  • Thanks, for my daughter though it’s like she’s the only one that’s ever gone through this!

  • Wish your girl good luck ! I know she’s not alone in these feelings.

  • Thanks for the advice. Yes I did tell her about the buddy system with the year 10’s, that did give her a bit of encouragement. I think the first day will definitely be the hardest!

  • I think all kids are a bit scared or nervous starting high school but when you don’t know someone it will be a bit extra hard. I think I would invite her old school friends over and maybe start a chat together about their feelings starting high school. One thing I do know is that they also do the buddy system at high school which I think is positive and helpful.

  • Oh by the way, thanks for the great advice!

  • I just read the answer to my daughter and she said, “I’m so scared”. She’s going to a high school where she won’t know anyone as we are moving to a new suburb. Hopefully there will be other students in the same position as my daughter and they can make friends on the first day!?

  • My daughter start high school next year as well, so it’s all new to me too.
I plan to visit the school with her this last term of yr 6 to buy some school clothes and explore the school ground.
Do you know someone with children at the high school your kids will go to ?
My neighbour has kids at the high school my daughter will go and I advised her to have a chat about how their first year was at the school, what expectations there are towards them, and whatever she would like to ask them. And for the rest we’ll wait and see and go with the flow.
