After an expensive trip to the vet today, and a follow-up needed in a few weeks, I was thinking pet insurance might be a good idea. Does anyone have it and if so, what does it cover? Are preventative things like vaccinations, flea and worming covered too?

  • I have thought about getting it multiple times, I just haven’t got around to getting any. Slack I know

  • I think it’s a great idea, having just spent nearly a $1000 on our dog. I don’t think it covers flea and worm treatment etc and I know a lot of them don’t cover for pre existing conditions. Something we need to get onto asap

  • yeah i wonder if there is a pet insurance comparison website. maybe google it.

  • I used to use real pet insurance. I know it was really cheap and I always got about 60-75% back. My cat once ate multigrain bread, just the corner of a piece. Violently ill. We rushed him to the AEC and he stayed two night on a drip. Cost around two grand, we got majority back.

  • We are with Medibank Pet Insurance. Yes, vaccinations are included and routine care too. 80% of the vet bill. But there is a limit of $165 on the amount of routine care you can claim every year. We chose Medibank because we have the health insurance with them, so we get 10% discount on the pet insurance. But I regret having done that. Because with Medibank you have an excess of $200 per condition per year. That’s quite a lot. RSPCA was $10 per month more expensive than Medibank when we took the insurance out, in Janaury 2013. But with RSPCA you don’t pay any excess and that makes the difference.
We can’t change now, because my dog developed an allergy when he was just 4 months old. If we move to RSPCA now, he will be starting with a pre-condition. And this way he would never be covered for the allergy.
I advise you to compare at least 2, maybe 3, pet insurances and then decide what to do.
But I think it’s really important to have it. If your dog ever needs an operation, or he’s bitten by a snake, you wouldn’t maybe able to pay for the vet bills otherwise.

  • We use RSPCA, really good, can’t remember if it included vaccinations or not
