Hello!

It really bugs me that “kids meals” in cafes, and especially restaurants are always to unhealthy. The usual options are “fish & chips”, “nuggets & chips”, “spaghetti bolognese” and “pizza”. Not one of these options has fresh veggies and not one has any fresh fruit. Most usually are offered with a sugar and preservative filled fruit juice.

Whats so hard about offering a dip and nibble option with a selection of fresh cut veggies and dip, a piece of fruit and some nice bread? A small portion of kid friendly veggie soup would be fine too. Do others feel the same about kids meals?

  • Agree they’re not healthy but at the same time I doubt my kids would choose veggies over nuggets and chips or spag bol when they’re out.
What annoys me the most is the size. They don’t really cater for toddlers who eat only a handful of food so most of it gets wasted!

  • You could always buy a side of veggies, or the entree soup for you child if you’re not happy with the regular options.

  • I agree that they are not very healthy, but then again we don’t eat out much so an occasional unhealthy meal doesn’t worry me.

  • yes kids meals aren’t very healthy and often little variations available. But you can play around.
I often ask for a side of steamed veggies, a fried up or scrambled egg with for example some wedges. Eventhough it’s not on the menu, many restaurant are willing and able to make that. I always look at the side orders & starters.

  • It is improving, but I agree that I’d like to see a greater range.

  • Yes, super frustrating. I usually will ask for a salad bowl with no dressing and a plain grilled chicken breast. Usually most places will accommodate and I refuse to go back to the places that wont!
Sometimes I have ask for an adults meal without too much seasoning and salt and then ask for two plates and I divide it for my two kids myself! But only handy when you have even number of children!

  • I feel exactly the same. I usually give them some of my meal. But sometimes I just let them have the unhealthy option as it’s not what they usually get at home. It doesn’t hurt to have a treat when going out for a meal

  • The menu is very limited for children! Shame!

  • I’ve never ordered a kids meal for my son. I aim for places with all day breakfast and get him scrambled eggs or something.

  • OMG/// how frustrating is this

  • Definitely! I often order a large healthy main meal, take a kids bowl with me and put some from my plate in it.
Nutrition station has sweet potato fries which is probably the healthiest chip option I’ve ever seen for kids.

  • OMG yes!!! If I wanted my kids to have frozen processed nuggets for dinner I’d buy them for $3 a box and cook them myself (no I wouldn’t…lol) but paying $10 for the crap means we don’t eat out a lot. I’d like a small dish, same as the adults. Kind of like what they get when they are at home.

  • The full sized meal option can work if you have more than one child – pretty expensive option if you have an only child. It makes so much sense to offer freshly made food to kids – they are people after all and deserve decent food. No wonder so many kids like fast food when they grow up – they are trained by the commercial food industry from toddlerhood!!

  • Yes, it is frustrating. I particular get peeved at chicken nuggets as an option. As said before, our kids tend to eat of our plates or I have them eat most of their meal at home before we leave so at least they’ve eaten something I’m happy with first!

  • Yes so frustrating! I just order a proper adult meal and share it between my two kids :)
