Hello!

I would like to know whether anyone with a food dehydrator makes own dried fruits and fruit rolls for their family – does your family prefer home made? Are they worth the costs?

  • Relatives of mine regularly go camping in tents. They take mainly vegetables they have dehydrated themselves. They are light and compact to pack and easily cooked on a fire, bbq hotplate or portable gas stove

  • Yes I have one and think it’s very handy not only for dried fruit and fruit rolls, also for dried veggies, seeded crackers, activating nuts and meats / beef jerky if you like (making it extremely practical for if you like to go camping).

  • I had one and used it so infrequently that I gave it away.

  • Nooooo, but I really want one. I oven dried tomatoes last year and reckon a dehydrator would make this job so much easier

  • I don’t have one but it does sound handy!

  • My aunt has one and uses only when their kiwi vine produces a glut of fruit. She spends a few weekends dehydrating them all. It’s a but fiddly and time consuming but they turn out fabulous. She doesn’t tend to use it for the rest of the year though she doesn’t have small kids anymore.

  • I have friends who grow all of their vegetables and have fruit trees. I know they used theirs a lot very successfully. I wasn’t over there when it was being used, and don’t know how much they cost. I would think that if you grew your own produce every year and have surplus, it would pay for itself.
You know the quality of your own produce before you do it. It hasn’t been sitting in coldstores or coolrooms for what have been weeks, or in some cases months. Some growers hve their own and send them to the markets in batches

  • I have seen it done on the food shows on TV and they seem to dry them by baking them ain the oven on a baking tray .

  • yes i know of people that make a puree of fruit and dry it in the sun.

  • We used to grow our own fruit when I was a kid. There was a lot of surplus so my dad used to make something called fruit leather. No dehydrators back then tho, they were set out in the WA sun to dry. They were yummy, so much better than shop bought

  • Thanks for these ideas – have discovered that a friend has one, so am borrowing that to see how they work for me. I think I will find it great thought!

  • yes it can be so handy. make dried fruit for the kids and you can dry chillies or do beef jerky!. it can be really handy. the only thing is the noise! some are so noisy that it is distracting but some brands are quiet so google product reviews for insight.

  • Maybe add this one to my Christmas list!

  • Sounds like a brilliant idea! Worth looking into.

  • I don’t have it, but I wish I would. I’ve got a friend that uses it regularly and she’s very happy with it!
