Hello!

My husband drives around all day for work. I struggle to find foods that will stay fresh and also fill him up. At the moment he eats way too much takeaway because it is so easy. He takes banana-nut muffins when I make them but looking for some more options. Any ideas? He doesn’t have access to a microwave or anything.

  • My husband loves zuchinni slices or quiches!

  • A cold pasta salad or coleslaw

  • Tinned tuna and salad, sandwiches, wraps,

  • A meal with protein will help fill him up and drinking water frequently. He could eat leftover tuna bake (cold), a fish or meat or egg sandwich or roll. Go for a more substantial bread such as sourdough, rye, wholegrain which will fill him up for longer. Bananas are filling and easy to eat.
My dad used to take a small esky on the road filled with food and ice coolers. He would also have a large water container filled with ice and water.

  • Love the idea of a cooler for the car – much cheaper in the long run than take away.

  • Try zucchini slices or muffins, pasta verde with spiral pasta and fresh veggies and seasoning, homemade pizza ,hot dogs rolls

  • Lots of great suggestions…. especially the home-made slices/mini quiches .. you can use everything from veggies and salmon and cheese to sweet potatoes.. depending whether he needs more fat/protein/carbs to feel full……. I guess he wants something that is also ‘easy’ and my go to snack when driving about is a bag of nuts and dried fruit eg almonds, walnuts, brazil nut with some sultanas, or maybe apricot etc. for sweetness.. you get the protein, healthy fats and carbs in that mix too.

  • What about some homemade vegetable slice?you could add any vegetables even ham if you like!l would recommend a well insulated lunch box to keep food fresh too!

  • Definitely get a little esky then you can have sandwiches or wraps of a wide variety, fruit, bananas usually help fill you up. I’d also pack nuts they are quick, easy and satisfying.

  • The esky idea is a good one too for longer trips. We always use an esky and insulated bags for all trips.

  • Someone else suggested upping protein – that sounds brilliant !
You could do sandwiches/wraps/rolls with tuna, egg or roast chicken. Try to avoid processed meats.
If he likes baked beans or thick soups – these can travel and stay warm in a good Thermos. Mini quiches travel well too. These can be made in batches and frozen. Pop the in a lunchbox and they thaw in time for lunch.
Home made sushi and rice paper rolls may be good too. :)

  • I would buy a little esky to help keep things fresh. You can also buy bags that keep food hot or cold. Maybe worth looking into them then you can safely pack just about everything. There are even insulated bowls to keep food hot. Lots of things to help

  • My girl is in kindy and every day she has a cold meat and salad wrap (lettuce, cheese, cucumber, and whatever cold meat we have, and mayonnaise), a small tub of yoghurt, and some cut up fruit and cheese. They also need to have some morning fruit snack, which is usually cucumber, pear and apple. And of course there’s the bottle of water. Our school is a no packaged, healthy food only type school.

  • My partner had the same problem so he invested in a mini cooler/fridge for the car.

  • Maybe invest in a lunch box that is insulated and keeps food cool and still fresh tasting; add cold packs to keep the food at a safe temperature. I use a thermos for warmer foods such as soup. Healthy wraps are easy to fill with lots of healthy foods and easy to eat too with little mess. Homemade muesli bars and fruit bars and savoury and sweet muffins are good options too.
