Hello!

Baby grandson (6 1/2 weeks) has constipation pretty bad. Have gel stuff to put up his bum when it’s really bad, but prefer to not use, band have been advised to use sparingly. Am using brown sugar in warm water, seems to be helping with regularity, stools are still lumps tho. Is it safe to use regularly, it won’t make his bowels lazy? Any other natural suggestions?

  • If a baby under 6 weeks is constipated, you will need an assessment by a doctor to exclude an underlying condition. Take your baby to a doctor, or seek help from a midwife or child health nurse if: your baby’s poo is dry and crumbly or like pellets, or they seem to have pain and discomfort when doing a poo.
    Since a baby of 6wks just drinks milk and doesn’t use extra water or solids yet you can’t do much diet wise, but there are some things you can do;
Gently move your baby’s legs in a cycling motion — this may help stimulate their bowels.
Gently massage your baby’s tummy clock wise.
And a warm bath can help the muscles relax (your baby may do the poo in the bath, so be prepared).

  • I’ve heard that Kiwi fruit works to relieve constipation in babies, but I would check with a GP or health nurse first.

  • My daughter in law used brown sugar in warm water for her 6 week old. It worked. Only one drink early in the morning. He’s now 5 months and has no problem with constipation

  • I’ve always used a natural form such as prunes and fruit.

  • Massaging around bubs belly ina clock wise direction will help also. Just be careful when using anything like brown sugar and water etc that you arent doing more harm then good. I would be suggesting speaking to a doctor

  • iF i MIGHT ALSO SUGGEST MASSAGE TUMMY IN CLOCK WISE DIRECTION,CAN HELP AS i PERSONALLY DO IT. aS A CHILD i REMENBER HAVING TO HAVE SUPPOSIORIES PUT IN MY BOTTOM. aLSO THEY USED TO GIVE ME CASTOR OIL OLD WIVES REMEDIES i KNOW BUT IT DID HELP TOO. SEE A MASSAGE PRACTITIONER OR LOOK IT UP ON LINE. AS IT IS HORRIBLE NOT TO BE ABLE TO GO AND WHEN YOU DO IT IS PAINFUL TOO. hOPE ALL WORKS OUT AND THESE SUGGESTIONS MAY HELP. tHE INTERNET IS A MOUND OF RESOURCES IF YOU GOOGLE THE PROBLEM, FOR BOTH YOU AND YOUR BABY.

  • Try the bicycle legs. Moving his legs up and down.

  • A spoonful of prune juice in baby’s milk used to work for us.

  • Feed plenty of stone fruits – either pureed, mashed, or just cut up, depending on the baby’s age. Also try to get them to drink as much water as possible.

  • This is definitely one for the doctor or child health nurse. In the meantime look on Youtube for ‘baby wind massage’.

    Good luck

  • A bit or brown sugar in cooled boiled water or pear juice!

  • Hi, I’m having the same issue my daughter. The doctor advised to give her more fibre in her diet but she is very fussy. I have been giving her lots more water and added Camomile tea (no sugar) and that seems to work well. Hope it helps

  • chiropractor maybe? not sugar! its normal for them to go a long time (6 days!)

  • Look go speak to your child maternal health nurse as some of the advice MoM’s are giving you is correct but not suitable for a 6 1/2 week old. Brown sugar in water is fine. Here is a link to a reputable website which will also help. It is great for all things related to babies which health professionals use.

  • My DIL had the same problem with her 2nd child recently & it was easily fixed with a different formula. I remember doing tummy massages with my own 3 were bubs (that were breast feed) when they showed signs of constipation & that always worked.
