Hello!

At what age can a baby drink from a straw? I need to get my Bub to drink more water but struggles with anything other than the bottle. Is it an age thing? All she does is chew on straws in cups, sippy cups. I’ve tried so many brands and types but it seems she just can’t do it. Wondering if it’s an age thing when they can suck from a straw?

  • Maybe try using a small plastic cup. Going from bottle to straw takes a hit of coordination. They tend to tip the cup upside down whilst their mouth is on the straw.

  • we taught our kids to drink from straws by using juice boxes, just a gentle squeeze and they kind of suck it while swallowing, just don’t squeeze too much in at a time. I also had a bottle top that had a straw inside the bottle, they sucked the top like a dummy and the drink came up through the straw

  • There are 360 cups with no straw that is really what your looking for or just supervise while tmhes having a drink

  • Depends on bubs age. Why can’t you offer water from a bottle? You can get transitional sippy cups. It’s a new skill to learn and could take time

  • Have you had any luck yet? I found my son really like the B.box sippy cups.

  • Best is to transition baby from bottle to sippy cup and from sippy cup to straw cup. The best age to transition to a straw cup is between 9 and 15 months of age though it may vary depending on the baby. Just like introducing a sippy cup, there should be no major changes taking place in baby’s life while introducing a straw cup (like the birth of a sibling or house relocation. Such events can upset the baby and make it more difficult to wean. Also introduce the baby to the cup beforehand so that the baby gets the hang of things).

  • I think it depends on the individual baby. My daughter didn’t drink well from the straw until 4. She liked bottles so I just progressed her from baby bottles to drink bottles. It took a few goes until we found ones she could handle so don’t spend too much money & don’t panic straws will happen.
