Hello!

I’ve got a 9 week old boy, and he’s sleeping very well at night time on his bed between 4-6 hours. But at day time he doesn’t want to sleep on his bed he always wants to be carried. Every time I’m putting him down he’s waking up and he’s crying so I’m just letting him sleep on me and it’s really hard as I need to do some other things. Could you please give me some tips so he’ll settle down and sleep well at day time. Thanks in advance. How do you get a 9 week old to sleep in bed during the day?

  • Ensure the room is dark, try to be quietish, and try to do the same calming thing before every nap (eg a bottle, or a lullaby).

  • Often these things take some adjustment time. Plus his sleeping habits will change in a few weeks around the 12 week mark. I would try and avoid starting a habit now that may make it harder to get him to settle in a cot later. Maybe read some information from a parenting service like Karitane about how to settle him so you can get in a good routine now and he can move towards self settling later

  • My best answer would be to put him in a wrap or a carrier!

  • Did you manage to get him sleeping better during the day?

  • how is he now :)

  • Any luck with the advice below?

  • we got a swing to help with this situation

  • or put them in a rocker to sleep

  • you might have to hold her in your arms until she falls asleep and then put her to bed

  • He is having some separation anxiety form you during the day, it must be very hard on you during the day time.

  • I used to put my baby on a rocker on the floor, rock her to sleep and then leave her there

  • Watch out for tired signs, wrap him and place him in the same place for all of his sleeps. He’ll love the routine.

  • My babies were both like this early on. Remember that they are adjusting to their new world and want to be near mum. From about 4-5 months old I just persevered and kept putting them down through the day, if they woke up id resettle and put down again as many times as it took. It’s draining but after about a week bub would go down first time. Otherwise you could try baby wearing.

  • if he is sleeping well at night which is giving you rest be grateful for that. no baby is perfect but at least you are getting your sleep.

  • I always had the Bassinet with me in the Lounge and would keep a Firm hand on my Son until he drifted off.
