Hello!

It’s time to get rid of the dummy! My daughter is nearly 3 and still sleeps with her dummy. How can I take it off her without her getting too upset? Any suggestions would be great.

  • Dummies were packed up and taken to the hospital for the babies – nurses were super, and my son was fussed over. A successful parting!

  • Definitely looking for answers to this as well.

  • It’s a tricky one as what will work with one child may not with another. My son was just over 3 when his Grandad and him decided it was time to burn the dummy. So they went out to the paddock, built a fire then my 3yo threw in his dummy. So this may not work with her..but maybe something ceremonious like this might work?

  • My kids never had dummys but my niece had one till she was 3. When we went to the shop she wanted a Barbie so we said if she wanted the Barbie doll she had to give her dummy to the lady because only big girls without dummys can play with barbies. She gave the dummy to the sales assistant & was more than happy to take the Barbie doll. She never thought about the dummy again after that.

  • Lisa Craig does this help?

  • We gave my daughters dummy to the easter bunny. She has surprised us and never asked for it again, she really took it in her stride. We spoke about it for a few weeks leading up to it and counted down the days as they got close. She was 2.5 at the time.

  • My daughter left hers out for the fairies. They collected it during the night and took it to another baby who needed it. To say thankyou they left her a present.

  • She lost it and we didnt bother looking for it she was 14 months old it wasnt too hard just dont give in if they do get upset they will move on

  • A letter came in the mail for each of my daughters from the ‘dummy fairy’ just before they were 3. It said that they were going to be big girls soon and didn’t need a dummy and that she would come and take them to give to the little babies. We bought small cheap boxes from the $2 shop, the girls decorated them with text and glitter and then put all their dummies inside. The next morning the fairy had taken the dummies and left a note to say thank you and how proud she was of the girls for falling asleep without any drama. The fairy also left a surprise in the box for the next 3 nights – bubbles, stickers and new crayons if I remember correctly :) Worked exceptionally well because the kids knew what was going to happen! Will be doing it with my youngest again in around 12 months time :)

  • Try using the dummy fairy. Get the child to help decorate a paper bag. Collect all dummies before bed and ask the child to say goodbye and put them in the bag. Tell them the dummy fairy will come and take them for babies that need them and leave a present to say thanks. Thru the night dispose of dummys and put in a small gift (a teddy or doll).

  • Wth is a dummy I’ve been reading through the comments and its really bothering me that i can’t figure it out

  • Tia Louise Wilkinson

  • divorce papers?

  • My little girl was the same. We told her that 3 yr olds are not allowed dummies and the dummy fairy will take it to a new baby who needs it more. It worked!!

  • So many ideas that I’m sure to try! My 1 and a half year old is very attached to her dummy and gets so upset if she doesn’t have it or can’t find it. We take it when she wakes up and only give it to her when she asks without freaking out and crying. She lasts a couple of hours and has it back for half hour then gives it to us… hopefully shell just give it over for good. But love the idea of the dummy fairy!
