Hello!

I have tried and tried over past 5 years to stop smoking. I’ve used the patches and tablets both caused a reaction. It’s affecting my health now but it’s such a hard habit to break after nearly 26 years. I need to hear other ideas on how you have succeeded in throwing away a bad habit. Thanks

  • Lollipops and gum worked for me

  • I see this is an old question. Did you succeed giving up smoking ? What worked for me when I promised myself that all the money I used for cigarettes could be used for something I really like. I choose a hobby of mine (Knitting and sewing). Never ever did I buy such beautiful wool and material before. It really worked motivating.

  • They say to never give up on giving up. Go see your Dr for some advice. Google the Quit website. They send out Quit packs with all sorts of ideas, including phone help when needed. Just don’t give up, it will happen, you need to find what works for you!

  • While I have no quit tips that work, I am thankful to have read the answers accompanying this question. My son and partner both smoke and wish to give up but can’t quite seem to do it. I will be passing some of these tips onto them. Thank you

  • Some good other tips. Find a hobby or distraction to do when you get cravings. Also if you slip up don’t loose heart. One slip up doesn’t mean you need to give up giving up! It just means you’ve had one and you’re still giving up smoking. All the best and we’ll done for trying, it’s hard work xx

  • Its hard trying to give up smoking, visit your doctor and see if the medication agrees with you.Good Luck!

  • hope you are going great with this journey

  • if you can’t quit cold turkey, then go see your doc. keep busy and when you would normally go for a smoke, go for a walk or do a chore and distract yourself. congrats for making this tough decision

  • Hypnosis worked for my brother. He said he did light up one cigarette a few days later but could not stand the smell or taste and never smoked again!

  • Im going to give E-cigarettes a try a lot of $2 shops are now selling them.

  • Have you spoken to your doctor try medication?

  • Good on you for wanting to give up. I’ve never smoked and couldn’t even imagine how difficult it must be. Wish you all the best.

  • It is a really hard habit to break.
I stopped 14 years ago when I received a call telling me that my Dad was dying of cancer. I was sitting there smoking at the time. I got off the phone and looked at my kids and knew that I didnt want them to feel what I was feeling at that moment so i stubbed out the cigarette and threw the rest of the packet in the bin and never looked back. I found it was easier to give up for the sake of my children. It is hard but you know that you are killing yourself and if you can perhaps start thinking that you have to do this so that you are there for your kids and grandchildren.
I know people try hypnosis and say that helps so perhaps that something you could try.

You will notice that after only a week of not smoking that you skin will look better and you will start to look younger…thats a great bonus.
IF you catch a cold it wont be as hard to get over as when you were smoking.
You wont stink anymore…even though you dont notice it…if you smoke then you smell. Wait until you no longer smoke and walk past a smoker in the street. The smell is truely disgusting.
You will save so much money. Its amazing how much money is spent on cigarettes.

You can do this. It wont be easy but you, your children and future grand children are worth it.
Good luck…stay strong and remember…you are worth it.

  • I gave up smoking just over 4 years ago I was smoking for about 20 years my hubby & I decided just to give up & what I did I thought I was like I was giving up for a week, everytime I ate something I brushed my teeth with mint toothpaste cause for me everytime I did it I didn’t feel like a cigarette as I didn’t like to smoke after I brushed my teeth & everytime time I craved cigarettes I drank grapefruit juice tasted horrible but it was kinda simalar taste to cigarettes so it stop the craving I think there’s something in the grapefruit juice that gets the nicotine out of yr system faster, count to 10 while I was breathing out I couldn’t do that’s at first, eat mint chewing gum, keep busy go for a walk cause once u sit down that starts yr head going, eat breakfast lunch & tea as for me I always skipped meals, also I tried to change some of my daily routine & TREAT yrself with the money u save, I did all this until the craving stop for me when I finished week one it got easier then slowly I fazed everything out.
…. WARNING …. When u give up don’t eat lollies cause the taste sooo good & food taste so different
I know mine prob extreme but it worked for me. When yr ready u can do set a date & do it & take it day by day I was one person that thought I couldn’t do it, the first week hard but it gets easier
    Good luck

  • Just give up. That might sound callous because I know it’s hard. But the only thing that worked for me was to make that decision really firmly in my mind. I found my reason to quit…which was funnily enough not for me or my health…I quit for my child. I gave myself no room for excuses, no reasons why it’s so hard, no just one mores, no I can’ts. I started replacing a ciggie break with a quick walk preferably somewhere I hadn’t been before and a sesame snap. For some reason they worked for me they are yummy, require chewing and are (for me) satisfying. I did have to take myself away from the people I smoked with a lot and out of the situations that triggered me. I also really recommend washing everything really thoroughly in citrus based cleaner, scrub it, the smell of smoke and residue persists for ages and if you catch a whiff it doesn’t help you and the third hand accumulated smoke residue is harmful, particularly for babies who are on the floor a lot (residue sinks).
