I did ask a pharmacist but she didn’t really know. She said it should be okay if he can chew and asked me if he was on solids, even though i told her he was 2 years old, and he was standing next to me…I am only considering giving them to him as he will hardly eat- he skips meals and doesn’t eat much of his meals at all, and I dont want him to start loosing weight (which he hasnt yet).

  • I would talk to your GP first. And possibly a nutritionist.

  • I think it is best to check with either your childhood nurse or a paeditrican if you are concerned about his eating . There are so may reasons why kids don’t eat, eg don’t like food, not hungry etc. At such a young age, I would not consider vitamins unless it is advised by a doctor as kids need natural nutrients. My kids went through a hate food stage and was told not to worry by the nurse , so take him for a checkup to make sure there are no other issues .

  • Multi vitamins won’t stop him from losing weight, he needs food to maintain a healthy weight. But multi vitamins would be good to replace the nutrients he may be missing out on. You can get kids vitamins, try another chemist

  • its prob a gimic, but saying that I give my toddler them. he still gets sick though

  • Have a discussion with your GP.

  • also just saying, i think that you aren’t supposed to give children under two, a multi vitamin

  • No. Unless you get his vitamin and mineral levels checked first I think it’s useless. There would certainly be an underlying cause for his food aversion and may quite possibly have leaky gut and not be able to absorb the multi vitamin anyway.

  • some kids are really fussy and it’s normal to be concerned. i got around this by letting my child make decisions about what she would like potaoes or sweet potatoes for example and just make sure that they eat lots over the day because some children like to graze instead of sit down for a huge meal

  • I think it is a great idea – especially if you think his diet is lacking.

  • All 3 of my kids (4, 3, 3) have a multivitamin each day, and have since about the age of 2. My girls also have an omega3 vitamin as it makes a huge difference with their eczema.

If you’re looking for weight gain, there is a powder that you can put in milk – sustagen I think it’s called. I gave it to my son when he was being super fussy with his food and was worried he wasn’t getting enough of what he needed.

  • My son is 3.5yrs. He was born prematurely and we were advised to make sure he had multivitamins from the beginning. We were told we could stop at one point if his diet increased. We tried but he wasnt eating well. He now takes a chewable multiV every day and we have found his appetite increased when we went back to giving it to him. See your Dr, baby health centre or even paediatrician for advice- they may refer you to a dietician

  • A multi won’t help weight gain. Maybe a toddler milk is more appropriate. Whatever the body doesn’t need in terms of vitamins, it will excrete it out anyway. You will see this in bright almost fluro looking urine. I wouldn’t recommend a multi for long term use though, nothing beats a balanced diet.

  • thanks heaps for the advice ladies, i have started giving them to him! :)

  • I give my children them.

  • If you are concerned about your child see your GP and be guided by him. Your child may need a tonic but I would be loathe to give him vitamins at such a young age. Better to try to encourage him to eat different foods. At this age they are fussy eaters but get better.
