Hello!

I am looking to put my son into Kindy soon and want to find out how much he should already know before he gets there, eg Colours, Numbers etc

  • I wouldn’t be concerned either. It’s more important to prepare your child mentally than academically. And all our kids perform at different levels

  • I wouldn’t worry. Chirldren make great strides while they’re in Kindy.

  • Kindy is where they start to learn most things, you’ll be surprised how quick they pick it up. Don’t be too concerned

  • I think all kids learn at different stages. He will pick up a lot from kindy. I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

  • I think kindy is where they start to pick up most things

  • they should at least be able to write their own name and recognise it

  • My twins are nearly ready for kindy
Ive been told toilet training is a must and everything else will come.
Most kids have separation troubles but they learn soon enough that Mum is back to pick them up and everything else will happen in time

  • To me if he is 3yrs old the most important thing he needs to be focused on is separating form you happily, being able to play with other children recognising name is good but not essential, knowing the basic shapes and colours is also a good start but not essential, I consider 3yr olds main focus is the social skills and 4yr old works on school readiness. If 4yr old then being able to count to 10 to maybe be able to identify their name, know the basic colours and shapes.

  • Kindergarten is the first year in Primary School in NSW. I worry more about social skills and ability to deal with change. Toilet training is a must. After that in our house we worked on name recognition, spelling of name and writing, recognising the alphabet and knowing the sounds the letters make, pencil grip, recognising numbers and counting to 20.

  • every body is different he will pick it up very quickly when he is ready

  • maybe try to introduce shapes, alphabets and write his own name.

  • It doesn’t really matter, whatever he is “behind” on they will work with him to learn, it is amazing how quickly they pick things up at kindy, plus the social interaction is great for kids, and a bit of extra time for mum doesn’t hurt either ;)

  • Hi, our son is starting kindy next year to, and we have just started to teach him how to write his name and the alphabet. Also how to count to 15. He is our eldest, but i think those things would be beneficial.

  • Hi Megan,by the time your child leaves kindy they should be able to recognise numbers up to twenty, and recognise all their letters and know which sound they make.So anything you can teach him before he gets there will be beneficial,I know they arereally upping the teaching, compared to when my first child went to kindy 4 years ago.

  • he should be able to write his own name and know a few things before he goes
