ANON: My daughter is nearly 2 and she had a fall nearly 2 weeks ago as I was dropping her off at daycare, she seemed to land a bit awkwardly but didn’t think much of it at the time. Daycare called not long after I dropped her off while I was on the way to work and said how she seems to be in pain, refusing to walk but when she did taking 2-3 steps before falling to the fall crying. I picked her up and took her straight to the doctors and even had an X-ray done of her leg, no breaks or fractures. She was still refusing to walk a couple of days later, so took her back to doctors who advised to give her pain relief and lots of encouragement to walk, if not walking, go back. She still wasn’t walking, so back to the doctors who checked her out again (keep in mind, first time at the doctors when the fall happened, she flinched at the doctor putting slight pressure on her right shin area) no reaction to any movements or pressure to the ankle, leg and hips, but when they tried to get her to stand and walk, she refused. The doctor believed it may just be her confidence has taken a hit (she was late to walk too and wasn’t very confident)
I’m now concerned again since she still isn’t walking but has been trying to stand again on her own without holding anything, and even took a couple of steps at my mums place, but daycare called to let me know when they put her down for a nap, one of the educators tried to adjust/move her and they touched her right leg and she flinched and seemed to be in pain, almost crying.
I will be taking her to the doctors again tonight.
My question is, has anyone been through something similar? Did it end up being a confidence hit or am I possibly missing something?

  • I know this happened a few months ago so I hope your daughter’s ok now and walking again. I don’t think you should ignore your instincts and keep taking her back to the doctor until they get to the bottom of it

  • Can you get a different doctor to check the x-rays in case the first missed something?

  • Has the doctor strapped it or anything to give it some support while it heals? I know when I injure myself even without a break it can take weeks for the pain to completely subside and if she has stretched a ligament or sprained a muscle it will give her a twinge of pain every time she moves it a certain way. In my experience, if an injury is causing that much discomfort, treat it as if it is a fracture. With the added support she should have more confidence to walk on it.

  • Take her to a different dr and see what they say as I wouldn’t muck around usually kids get over things but she must of done some damage to still having a problem with not walking.

  • Poor darling.
It might be that it was sore when it first happened and now she’s afraid it will still hurt if she puts pressure on it.
I would ask for an x-ray somewhere else though just to make sure.

  • Trust your gut. Mum knows best – could be worth asking for another X-ray… fractures in little ones can be hard to see sometimes

  • Oh dear sorry to hear this even though there is no fracture is there any swelling or bruising to the right leg? It seems like your little one is in pain

  • No sorry haven’t experienced or heard of anything similar. I hope that you get some answers so though

  • Is there bruising at all? It could be a skin or muscle injury rather than a break. Even without a break it could be causing a lot of pain?

  • No I haven’t had something similar ? Did you go back again ? Hope it becomes clear what’s wrong !! Keep following your gut; when you feel something isn’t right, persist on further investigation.

  • Sorry cant help you.sending you lots of love and i hope she will be better soon

  • Sorry, I have no suggestions for you – my thoughts are with you and your little one though…. X
