Hello!

i was wondering if have we saved any money in the last few months compared to last year by staying at home? The biggest saving is no petrol for 5 weeks! has anyone else found a positive saving experience?

  • We travelled to Europe with the 6 of us in the covid period as my dad became terminally ill. It became a very expensive trip with all extra speed covid tests and missed flights. From what I recall this trip cost us $50.000

  • Yes….for me it was very positive. No use of the car so major saving there.
I didnt grocery shop as the house was well stocked in the first place so it was just paying the normal bills

  • Unfortunately no, have not been able to save during this pandemic, savings gone, and now in debt.

  • No not really but a friend has saved with all the take away she would buy for lunch!

  • What we saved in fuel and not eating out etc was balanced out by having hours cut back at work so no we didn’t save anything. We definitely lost money

  • I would say minus the annual holiday I have spent the same, if not more on all the utility bills.

  • We are ahead because of covid. The savings on daycare is a big one for us. We were both lucky in stable jobs and also not eatting out as much.

  • I find I’m spending less as I’m not going out to buy things at the shops. I don’t like buying online and really prefer to see what I’m buying so in that regard we are doing really well

  • Nothing at all here, more spent on food and having to buy stuff for home learning then stuff to keep the kids occupied. Electricity is going to be a killer too when that comes in! I do have friends that have managed to save but nothing here.

  • I wish I could say it made us save money but our electricity bill went up, we spent more on food and got less hours of work and not eligible for any assistance. :(

  • I wish this was the case for me, I have definitely spent more on electricity bills and grocery shopping.

  • I’m currently in the red this year has not been kind.

  • Sorry – no savings for me as we still had to use the care every couple of days like we used to pre COVID-19 and there were very few specials on offer at the supermarket.

  • no savings here, i think it actually cost us more! so much food

  • Groceries have probably been more expensive for us since the regular brands were not available and some shops bumped up prices of stock that they did have. Also some other household products (eg over gloves, umbrellas etc.) in short supply and only expensive models left. But the slower pace of life has certainly brought some savings – no driving lessons (they were a huge cost building up to P-plate test); less fuel costs; and no event fees for the sports.
