I think that you’ll finds its mildew or mould that is growing on the cardboard pots, they are a good idea but not entirely practical. You can use old egg cartons for a similar result!

Actually we noticed that one we collected last week smelt a little like fertiliser – or something similarly stinky. Yet none of our other ones have any real smell to them.

No smell with ours. I have only herb ones. Unsure if that makes a difference.

Mine have all been fine and we have collected quite a few.perhaps if you got one that smells funny, it might have just been up next to something damp or with moisture like frozen food.
