Hello!

Has anyone grown their own mushrooms from the mushroom kits available at gardening stores, Bunnings and the like? Any tips to avoid the poisonous ones? My little ones are keen on trying to grow their own after being to a mushroom picking experience at a farm recently.

  • i tried with one of the packs at bunnings but they just would not grow. i was a bit annoyed as i followed the instructions perfectly.

  • I hope you had more luck than me. Mushrooms are really healthy for you.

  • I was given a box as a Christmas gift and followed all the instructions. Not a single mushroom, so in effect I was given a box of dirt as a gift. (ha ha)

  • I bought one last year and not a single mushroom, tried to context the company only to find the details were for a non existent company. I would steer clear and buy them from the shops.

  • I know people who had them a few years ago. If you care for them properly and pick them at the right size as per instructions you will most likely get more than you can eat yourselves unless you have a large family. A family I know have 4 children and they used to get more out of 1 kit than they ate. You definitely won’t get any poisonous ones. The spores come from commercially grown ones.

  • I have had one if those kids. They’re brilliant. Not too expensive, easy to set up even easier to keep going. You can pick when mushies are small or huge and they’re so yummy!

  • The mushroom kits you buy don’t have poisonous ones. I got obey fir Xmas a few years ago, and I’ve since added it to annual wish list :) It was brilliant. Only bad thing was they only lasted for a few weeks. But they are delicious. You can pick them whenever, if you want button mushies, pick early. Big open mushies, you leave for longer. All you need to do is mist them, and the grow. Your kids will love a mushroom growing kit

  • my dad grew some when i was a kid and they are all the same type that you get in the packet. we used to pick some that would grow in the backyard and you have the button mushrooms grow and these other weird shape and texture (look) that would turn into powder if they broke and they were poisonous

  • Mum used a kit when we were kids, it was awesome. Pity I hate mushies.

I assume the kits are safe. They are seeds and they grown in the provided box.

  • great question I have seen these before I might give it ago also

  • We have grown mushrooms a couple of times my tips however are to avoid the boxes that contain 2 varieties as we ended up with one variety only, they others did nothing, and 2ndly just dont forget about them and make sure they get misted with water. Nothing worse then a box full of dried up mushrooms :-)

  • Tried and failed. But that’s probably more my fault than the kits fault, I’ve also failed at keeping cactus’s :p

  • I purchased a kit…I think it was from bunnings and we had a great time growing them.
I doubt very much that you would find poison ones in a kit as if that was happening im sure we would have heard about it on the news.
The kits are very easy to use and great for kids to get excited over. To start with you have to just keep watering and have them in a dark location like a laundry cupboard but then I moved mine to the kitchen bench.

  • If they are from a reputable source (I.e. Bunnings as you say) I am sure you would be fine: if in doubt, you could always ask them, or contact the company that makes them and ask about their process (E.g, how they avoid non-desirable mushrooms entering their product). That being said, they are a great idea, and I only wish our current house had an appropriate spot to grow them ourselves! (Our previous house had a great mushroom kit spot).

  • Oh I’m glad you asked this. I would love to grow mushrooms.
