Hello!

I’m currently a stay at home mum of 2 girls and I would like to start selling children’s dress ups. I plan on doing this via facebook and home selling at the start, but most wholesalers won’t sell to me because I don’t have an actual ‘shop’. I plan to have a ABN number and business name etc so I don’t see the problem. Does anyone have any advise?

  • This sounds like a wonderful idea. I hope all is going well with your home based business.

  • I think its FABULOUS. Dpending on what you wish to do ABN makes more choice to access what you want. And as your buisness grows then you can use the ABN to your advantage! I think do it! I have seen SO MANY friends start off like this and within a yr got an ABN and are a full blown buisness GOODLUCK

  • I wish you the best of luck

  • With the ABN, it should be enough. I have started by own business but haven’t need to deal with wholesalers, good luck with your business

  • good luck and post your Facebook page so you can advertise here.

  • well good luck to you and get out there!

  • Also; make sure you have done a lot of research on your business and have a good business plan.

  • As soon as you have a ABN then you will be ok to buy from wholesalers. Then you can introduce other items and you will need a ABN again to buy them in to sell to keep things interesting to grow your home business. (Australian Business Number (ABN) is a unique 11 digit number that identifies your business to the government and community) for those who don’t know…

  • Good on you for being adventurous and brave and starting a business. I hope it is successful for you. I agree with everyone else; once you have an ABN everything should work out for you.

  • Once you have your ABN, there should be no issues. I haven’t got an actual ‘bricks & mortar’ store, however do have a website and various social media for my business. Prior to obtaining an ABN, most wholesalers didn’t want to deal with me, however once I got the ABN, everything was fine.

    Good Luck with your business.

  • Good luck… I don’t really understand the ABN stuff – I’ve applied twice but have also had it cancelled twice!

  • You should be an individual sole trader when you make an Abn. You shouldn’t have to have a shop to be able to sell. People sell over the Internet.

  • I don’t see why having a shop would be a problem. Once you have your ABN and a registered business name, they shouldn’t even need to know if you have a shop.

Good luck. Selling online and making a decent profit is hard work. There is lots of competition. I hope it all works out for you :-)

  • Have a look at Ebay and Esty. Majority of the sellers on there will give you a discount if you buy in bulk and you dont require an abn or a business name.

  • I have my own business without a shop and haven’t had any problems though totally different.

Maybe try again after you have your ABN, there shouldn’t be any issues if you are a registered business. There’s load of online businesses that don’t have shops but still get the stock. If they still refuse, I’d look for other suppliers.
