I think I made the wrong choice for my children as their godparents are barely involved in our lives and I can’t help feel I’ve let my children down. Does anyone else regret their decision?

  • I think godparents are irrelevant in today’s society. Most people write their wishes in their will for their kids. It’s easy to change your mind you know. Let those close to you know…..”If anything happens to us, will you please make sure the kids go to…….”

  • I didn’t have much to do with my own godparents and it didn’t really affect me.

  • I chose two close family members as godparents and now neither are close to us. Just the way life is sometimes.

  • We didn’t have godparents for our kids, but my parents did for me – and chose a couple I don’t remember ever actually seeing, they were so uninvolved. They did better for my brothers. But I can’t remember it ever bothering me.

  • no biggy, just make a will and add this kind of thing into it, and say it over rules any previous decisions about god parents, etc

  • Yes my daughters god parents aren’t really involved. Couple split up so don’t even see her at all now. Bit sad but that’s life

  • i agree. guardians are far more important and relevant than god parents. god parents were for guiding the children religiously and often now people drift away from their own religion so it is not really relevant in some families. And you can ask someone in your church to help with that if you feel you need guidance.
As long as you have some friends who you feel would support your children in a time of need and step in without question then that is more important. A good role model to help your child make the right choices.

  • A godparent is only a tittle given to people who you think will be a good influence on your children growning up, dont feel sorry you made that choice. The more important decision for you is who you now would want to be your kids Guardians if something should ever happen to you and your childs father. Ask that special someone and that could allow someone special into your childs life that would otherwise not be as close to your kids as you would want them to be. That way your kids can have that special bond with someone special that you trust.

  • My first daughters godmother I have not seen or heard from her since my daughter was like 4 years old and she is now 21 years old

  • I agree Godparents aren’t as relevant in today’s society. I know many friends who have come to this conclusion. At the time of the children’s christenings the people they chose either moved on or just are not interested anymore. If you want to have someone there to sponsor your child through their religious studies ask someone you know connected to you and the church. You can just choose someone else and have a Naming Day at home and redo your God Parent thing and call the newly chosen Legal Guardians. Either way as long as you have a few good people watching out for your kids that’s all that matters.

  • You haven’t let your children down. Godparents aren’t as relevant in today’s society as they once were. As long as you’ve got Wills with conditions of what happens if you were to pass away is much more important than godparents.
