Hello!

I had my thyroid removed 4 years ago, after losing 30kg in 12 months (plus a host of other issues from an over active thyroid). I am still struggling to gain weight. I have the regular blood tests every 3 months and got my last tests back which the doctor said were “weird”. He accused me of not taking my daily Thyroxine….I was gob smacked as it is a daily ritual :( Apparently my brain isn’t registering the additional thyroid hormones but my body is still overactive. I’ve never heard of anything like this and am curious if anyone else has?

  • I have had my right Thyroid removed over 7 years ago now and my specialist and GP never even gave me medication to take said oh just go every 3 months get a blood test done that was it

  • Time for a new doctor. There is a Facebook page for support for those with thyroid issues and they list doctors across Australia who have been helpful. Unfortunately, I think a lot of GPs are generalists and thyroid issues is an area of speciality. Perhaps seek a second opinion with an endocrinologist who should be able to help you understand your blood test levels and smooth out any irregularities with your medications.

  • oh i hope that you will be ok. i haven’t had experience with this but i know someone who couldn’t lose weight becuase of it.

  • Goodness! You have endured a lot and lost a lot of weight too which has no doubt impacted on your body. Good luck with your testing, anomalies can sometimes turn up and then readings can return to normal.

  • I’m sorry. It must be really frustrating indeed!!

  • The Doctor told me to have further blood tests in 6 weeks (I feel like a freaking pin cushion)!!
Thank you both for the info – I’ll check out the Facebook page too.

  • Incredible! No, I’ve never heard of this problem before.
I suffer of hypothyroidism (Hashimoto actually) and I take Thyroxine every day. But I’ve got a problem kind of opposite of yours. My thyroid is not overworking but not working enough. So I’ve got problems losing weight.
You lost 30 kilos??? That’s a huge amount!!
How does the doctor want to proceed with you then?

  • search “FFPO Australia” on facebook (for thyroid patients only) It’s a closed group but there are a lot of people there who have done a lot of research and there is bound to be someone there who as a similar experience to you. There are also lists of thyroid friendly doctors in the “files” section along with lots of other info
