Hi, just wondering if anyone uses a healthy alternative for caster sugar in baking? If so what do you use?

  • i like to use coconut sugar. its a better alternative but it is a dark sugar so will not be interchangeable in all recipes

  • Personally I don’t like the bitter after taste of Stevia. Besides Stevia in it’s unprocessed form is a green leaf which you can buy in a ground leaf form which is green. I have stevia growing in my garden. However many people buy Stevia in the processed granulated white form which is not healthy https://janeshealthykitchen.com/the-toxic-truth-stevia/
From the natural sweeteners available yacon syrup is the lowest in Gi and has many health benefits however it is dear, raw honey is beautiful but should not be used in cooking/baking, coconut palm syrup and raw coconut palm sugar is another good natural option and so is maple syrup. Brown rice syrup isn’t as healthy as you may think and so is Agave syrup.
Stay away from artificial sweeteners !

  • I have used apple sauce (or pureed apples) in many of my recipes that call for sugar. Otherwise start reducing the sugar content each time you make it to see if it works, as sometimes the recipes are still successfull with half or even less than half of the sugar.

  • I prefer to use maple syrup, the pure stuff, or honey. When I make pikelets I like to add a mashed banana instead of sugar

  • Im sure you can use the artificial sweeteners?

  • I’ve been using Stevia in place of sugar as it is a natural alternative to sugar. Plus I find you use less amount of Stevia compared to sugar. Stevia contains far less calories than sugar.

  • Never used Stevia, however most people recommend it.

  • Stevia is now meant to be the next best thing. I’ve also heard people using Apple Puree.

  • I use hermastas natural sweetener, love it, makes tastes just as good minus the calories.

  • In baking you can make a few substitutes like whole meal flour instead of white and brown sugars instead of traditional white, the difference really is in how refined the ingredients are. You can use natural sweeters like stevia too but I would not recommend anything artificial, a little sugar never actually did any harm!

  • Coconut sugar :) use it for everything! Low GI

  • unpasteurized honey!

  • Stevia is supposed to be good. but have heard others replacing with Cinnamon or apple puree..

  • I believe natvia is good for this and Chia is a good alternative to eggs

  • Stevia that’s what I use when baking and when we have our tea and coffee etc. It’s not artificial so I have found, personally that it doesn’t taste any different to sugar, like equal does
