My almost 10 month old, ‘mr independent’ has gone on a finger only food diet since deciding that he will no longer be eating with a spoon and is a long way off being able to use one himself. Does anyone have healthy finger food ideas that I can give him for dinner?

  • Some really good suggestions below.

  • Bananas, cucumbers cut to fingers – the rusks that you can buy for babies..

  • fruit sticks, vegie sticks, bread sticks

  • What finger food did you end up making for your baby

  • Steam some broccoli and let him dip them in hummus… they love the extra fancy way..lol

  • Thanks for some more ideas, my daughter is the same. And she’s stating to get over the same finger foods,

  • cheese, cucumber, banana, zucchini, egg and soldiers, fish fingers, basically anything you would eat but smaller

  • Slice up sticks of cheese, cucumber, lightly toasted wholemeal bread, and give it to him on a plate with a little tub of hommous. Or you can try frozen fish, cooked and cut up into little sticks. Also toast soldiers with a boiled egg for dipping. My littlies love anything they can ‘dip’!

  • Toast with any spreads, zucchini slice cut into sticks, sandwiches, polenta chips. Steam any veggies and fruit and let him go for it. Just remember not to get too fixated on the mess. He is going to be messy to begin with, but there is no other way for him to learn. Invest in a good ‘messy mat’ for under his high chair

  • Some great answers here from the ladies

  • Cooked carrots sliced with a little tub of dip.

  • Line an oven/baking tray with baking paper. Make little drops of yoghurt, about the size of a 10c piece and freeze. Store in an airtight container in the freezer for up to a month. Great snack, particularly in this hot weather, when I’ve found my little one goes off dairy.

  • get a dehydrater. fruit. meat. heeses and fish and veggies. lptsa colour and different textures. pastry shapes spread with honey

  • Thinly sliced baby cucumbers does the trick with my child :)

  • Love all the ideas below! My ten month old has just started being fussy like that too, I make chow mein, spaghetti bolognaise, pumpkin & potato mash with a bit of Vegemite, steamed carrots cut up, it’s become very very messy at mealtimes now haha!!
