Help please! I LOVE onion in my salads but I cry my eyes out every time I cut them up. Has anyone got any advice on how to stop this?

  • When you peel onions immigiately put them in water and them cutting the onions

  • Maybe goggles – swimming or industrial (welding or grinding goggles) and a mask – you can buy them in packs – I have seen them in Bunnings but they may be cheaper elsewhere – I don’t know if the can he hand washed and re-used or not…..or maybe a pharmacist.
I have the same problem with some cleaning products.

  • I have tried many things but still end up crying.

  • Cut away from the root, it does help!

  • Try peeling under water if your eyes are so bad. It does help but a bit messy?

  • I would love to know!

  • Make sure use a sharp knife.

  • Goggles really work but I also pop them in the freezer for a bit first and that seems to help

  • I cut it end off the onion, give it a rinse & pop it in the freezer for a little while before slicing. It works a treat for those onion fumes.

  • Personally I think it makes a lot of difference how you cut them. (Sun) glasses or goggles help too and just have the tissues ready in case.

  • I’ve tried everything to stop the onion chop tears from rolling. Goggles are the only thing that has worked for me.

  • If you put them in the fridge then that will cut back on the tears. Another way is to leave the root of the onion intact and peel and dice the rest of the onion. I hope one of these works for you.

  • when you buy onions peel them and then freeze them until your ready to use
when you’re ready to use them cut them while still frozen then place laid out between two paper towel sheets to thaw and the paper towel will soak up the moisture to stop them being soggy
another tip when using fresh onion is to peel and cut off the ends and then hold under running water or let soak in a container of cold water for a few minutes as this helps get rid of the gas that causes the tears when being cut
ive also heard people say they have worn glasses, or swimming goggles to solve this problem too

  • When cutting onions turn the onion so both ends face away from you (these are the glands that have the nasties that make you cry), then chop off each end. Then cut onion lengthways and face the two ends away from you once more laying them on the flat edges. You can now slice or dice the way you like. Most times cutting like this I won’t cry at all but occasionally if the onion is really strong it’ll still get me. I find small onions can tend to be stronger ones too. Hope this helps.
