Help please! I LOVE onion in my salads but I cry my eyes out every time I cut them up. Has anyone got any advice on how to stop this?

  • Remove the skin then run them under cold water for a bit. I find this helps

  • wear a pair of swimming goggles when cutting onions

  • I have my swimming goggles on if I am chopping lots of onion. If it is only one onion, I will hold my breath or breathe through my mouth and at the same time blocking the air flow going up my nose (if it makes sense?)

  • Tea towel over the shoulder when chopping helps out.

  • I recently saw kitchen glasses for this very purpose at TK Maxx. They look very dame Edna

  • Putting on glasses or gggles might help. I’ve heard holding a slice of bread in your mouth while you’re doing it helps. I’ve also heard keeping the onion in the fridge reduces tears when you cut it. And also I ding a really sharp knife

  • You could wear goggles, or a face shield or a fancy slicer but I just like to pop them in the fridge! the longer they are in and the colder they are the less likely they are to affect your eyes.

  • I chew gum

  • I keep my onions in the fridge, sounds weird but they don’t sting nearly as much as when they are stored at room temperature.

  • I open the window or put the fan on and turn away while slicing slightly

  • When you peel onions immigiately put them in water and them cutting the onions

  • Maybe goggles – swimming or industrial (welding or grinding goggles) and a mask – you can buy them in packs – I have seen them in Bunnings but they may be cheaper elsewhere – I don’t know if the can he hand washed and re-used or not…..or maybe a pharmacist.
I have the same problem with some cleaning products.

  • I have tried many things but still end up crying.

  • Cut away from the root, it does help!

  • Try peeling under water if your eyes are so bad. It does help but a bit messy?
