My two daughters (6 and 8 years) recently had their ears pierced. Yes, it was a reputable place and no, it wasn’t a tattoo parlour and yes, they used a piercing gun. They are all looking good but the woman who did it said DO NOT TOUCH them for a few weeks and just use the saline spray twice a day. But I remember we had to give our earings a few turns and twists everyday when I had it done. I’ve heard horror stories of how the skin grows over the butterfly. If you’ve had your kids’ ears pierced, did you leave them or twist them? Thanks!

Ask your question
  • I would turn them as they will get stuck

  • Definitely twist them when you spray so they do not get stuck incase they do get some build up. I’ve done that with both of mine. Even now once they have healed I still twist their earrings – habit!

  • We always twisted – however make sure this is the right thing to do in this day and age. I know that one of my daughters wouldn’t let us twist them and didn’t do it herself though she promised she would do so with clean hands. End result when we did do a twist – blood poured everywhere, and I had a very frightened 10 yo to cope with. All was OK in the end.

  • Yes, as a kid myself, I was told to turn daily to avoid the skin sealing over the earring. It was the same advice given when my daughter had hers pierced. But you don’t change the earrings for several weeks, I forget exactly how long. And apply the spray daily

  • Also; we use products provided.

  • I had my own ears pierced at a tattoo and piercing parlour, the woman was good and took her time to get the placement right. I doused with normal saline daily on cotton wool for six weeks and twisted the stud with clean hands.

  • Maybe refer to an instruction sheet or call and double check?

  • My daughter had them at age 11 but she took them out for sport and didn’t put them back in for a little while and they closed up. She wants to get them done again. Never had any problem with turning them though.

  • Twisting them causes micro tears in the skin and makes them take longer to heal and any time you touch them the risk of infection goes up. Any time I’ve had my ears pierced (about 10 times) I spray them at least 5 times a day and don’t twist.

  • I would give them a twist. My son had his done not so long ago and we twisted them so they didn’t stick.

  • Hope all goes well with the pierced ears of your daughters !

  • It used to be twist I think but possibly changed since then. I’d say listen to what she said

  • When you spray them or they have a shower it’s best to give them a twist while moist. Other wise they will get stuck. I know had that problem with my daughter. Just don’t let them do it as they can have dirt on there hands and they can get infected very easily.

  • I think it’s for hygiene reasons they prob say don’t touch them? My (3rd) daughter just had hers done and I tell her to give them a turn after she’s washed her hands.

  • we definitely used the spray and twisted the backs of the butterfly earrings. changed them out to sleeper earrings as soon as the recommended weeks were over.
