Hello!

I have a seriously dry and itchy scalp. I have tried just about everything the shops have to offer. Does anyone have any tricks? I would love to know as it is driving me crazy……..

  • vegetable oil or olive oil is what my doctor recommended


  • I have been using pure coconut oil, warm up the coconut oil and massage it onto your scalp. I massage a little coconut oil every other day in my hair and the hair look shinier and healthier.


  • I would ask your GP about it and see what it is and what is causing it and see what you GP suggests also ask you chemist and see if they also can suggest something


  • Apple cider vinegar (diluted) and coconut oil are the go too in this house for dry heads


  • Pure coconut oil cheap from your local supermarket health section. This product is amazing you can use it as a hand cream and you can take it internally. Doing this heals you from the inside out. Look up all the benefits of Pure coconut oil you will be amazed. I use this product more and more. It smells amazing. People ask me what perfume I am wearing… none it’s the coconut oil I add to my bath water, wash my hair and use it as a hand cream. P.S. We managed to get rid of my daughters cradle-cap after many many years with coconut oil.


  • I agree – some fabulous suggestions here! I’d try natural remedies first such as apple cider vinegar (diluted) and coconut oil. I have tried regular vinegar with success and find my scalp itches in places when we experience a change in the weather. I wonder what the underlying cause of your husband’s itch might be? GOOD LUCK! :)


  • Some great ideas here. My hubby has this problem & has tried most things available on the market & some more natural remedies. Apple cider vinegar is so great for many things but he carries on like one of the kids because it stings. I hadn’t thought of coconut oil, and given its antiseptic like quality I’ll be suggesting he try this….tomorrow in fact.


  • Apple cider vinegar has powerful anti-inflammation properties that help kill the yeast and virus that can cause itchy scalp. Also, apple cider vinegar balances the pH levels of the scalp, which may help relieve itching and dryness.
    Rinse your hair and scalp with water and allow it to dry.
    Mix equal amounts of apple cider vinegar and water and pour the mixture into a spray bottle. Apply this mixture directly onto your scalp with the help of cotton balls. Spray it on your scalp.
    After few minutes, shampoo with normal water.
    Follow this remedy once or twice a week.

    Sesame oil is highly nourishing, healing and lubricating, making it an effective treatment for a dry scalp and give you relief from itchiness.

    Heat some sesame oil to warm it slightly.
    Massage your scalp with the warm oil before going to bed each night. For best results, massage the scalp with your fingertips for at least 10 minutes, wrap your head in a hot towel and leave it on for about 10 minutes before going to bed. When this oil remains on the scalp all night, it provides optimum moisturizing.
    Shampoo and rinse your scalp and hair thoroughly in the morning. Continue this treatment as long as necessary.

    Jojoba oil is a great natural moisturizing treatment to relieve a dry and itchy scalp. The molecular structure of jojoba oil is closest to that of our own natural oil or sebum, which makes it a very effective rejuvenating and hydrating treatment.

    Massage a small amount of jojoba oil onto your scalp for a few minutes before going to bed. Leave it on overnight.
    In the morning, wash your hair with a mild shampoo.
    Repeat this remedy once a week.

    Finally if your scalp is not settling after a couple of weeks or is becoming intolerable or bleeds or weeps a visit to the GP or skin specialist is needed.


  • Coconut oil massaged into the scalp left on over night! Use a shower cap to cover it over


  • use olive oil over night and make sure that you rub it in well, but make sure that you put a towel on your pillow as not to put the oil on to your pillow case…. wash out in the morning with a mild shampoo and condition

  • Hi, depends on whether you have dry or oily hair as to whether this would work but I swear by coconut oil.
    Also, you could try mixing two egg yolks, two teaspoons olive oil, and 1/8 cup of water. Mix until solution combined. After shampooing and hair is damp, let rest on your scalp for 15 mins. Rinse with warm water. (Not hot or youll cook the egg!)


  • Sounds like you may have seborrhoeic dermatitis. I use Nizoral 2% recommended by dermatologist when I have outbreak’s & it works wonders. Also lots of chemists have a naturopath that visits weekly. Maybe you’re body’s lacking something. Flaxseed oil is good to help reduce inflammation & promotes healthy skin & hair.


  • My dr told me to try selsun shampoo (spelling may be incorrect)..I suffer from bad dandruff and he said it should help after 2 weeks


  • HI, I would be looking at the ingredients in the shampoos & conditioners you use. You may have a dermatitis or allergy reaction to the ingredients making you itchy. I use a woolworths brand shampoo & conditioner (organic care) which has NO parabens, petrochemicals or sodium lauryl sulphates (SLS). It’s amazing the difference it has made to my scalp. You can also get natural products with NO additives as above, from health food stores. If you aren’t allergic to coconut, coconut shampoo/conditioner & even coconut oil (unprocessed) is really good for your hair, it doesn’t strip it of it’s natural oils & makes your hair soft & silky. If all else fails you may need to consult your Dr. Hope this helps.
