  • Base the weeks meals around the specials and if there are things on special that you use all the time then thats the time to stock up. Always check the reduced racks.


  • Always have a meal plan, buy in bulk whenever you can, cook as much from scratch as you possibly can and avoid take-aways. Make a shopping list of the things you need for the meals the coming week and don’t deviate from your list unless there is an extra special bulk buy available.

  • I do tend to just buy things on sale due to the price.


  • creating a weekly meal plan helped us a lot in avoiding excessive grocery shopping. You only list items that is necessary for the meals and immediately see the cost of each meal or item. From there you can check the online prices say for a brand then do price comparison again when at the store. I normally buy the cheapest priced item with the same quality. We do bulk buy only when the price was reduced. Specials on meat are okay as long as you cook them on the same day.

  • Shop around, buy what’s on special and plan meals. Also check the price per kilo, THAT is what you are really paying. Try seeing if you buy any un necessary items and cut back on those! Have one vegetarian meal a week. And look at portion sizes for everyone. When we have a roast dinner my husband always has bread and butter on the side to help fill him more (such a cheap option!). You can buy garlic bread rather cheaply, which we also use as a filler!

  • I always check my cupboards and place my order on line and pick it up. That way I don’t walk around the shop and pick up any extras. It’s quite difficult at the moment as we live in a small town and the prices have always been higher than elsewhere.

  • Try to eat more vegetarian meals! Meat is so expensive compared to vegetarian staples like beans and rice. I meal plan for the week and only shop once a week for the things I need.
