Hello!

Please help, my backyard does not get to much sun in winter so I have to grow my vegetables in pots, but they do not grow very big. How can I grow vegetables in pots?

  • For starters, not all veggies are suitable for growing in pots. So first check their suitability. Pots would also need more water as they tend to dry out quicker.

  • Plenty of water and plenty of sun too – to grow, grow, grow!

  • Vegetables grown in pots need as much soil preparation and care as vegetables grown in vegetable beds. If not thriving I would seek some advice from a nursery. I love talking to nursery staff – so helpful.

  • Don’t over crowd the pots. Use the biggest pots you can find. Use lots of fertiliser. Mulch to keep in moisture. Being in pots, you can move them around to chase the sun. Keep in mind, a lot of veggies aren’t suited to grow in Winter. This could be your problem

  • My mum (who is a great gardener) has recommended that I grow potatoes in my little patch because it doesn’t get much sun either! You can grow potatoes in pots!

  • You need good composted soil and yes pots that you can move around to be in the sunlight… also pick plants that are small.
