My three year old has just been diagnosed with autism which explains a lot but he has never been interested in potty training and now we have the diagnosis maybe some other mums who have gone through this could give some advice

  • Another thing to consider is using a social story and use first-then strategies

  • I think best start is to set him on the toilet at set times. A small toilet seat and toilet step/stool is helpful in my experience. Especially when a child is fearful it’s important to stay with the child and not walk away (even when it takes a long time on the toilet). It may be helpful to sing songs, read a book or watch a you tube video about toilet while using the toilet.

  • I am right now , but my Son is now 5 and still will not go. His school is very helpful. They can at least get him to sit on the toilet, not sure because they have small kids toilets.
But my Son can’t feel himself getting full and needed to go. Im finding it real hard sometimes trying to deal with Autism.

  • My son who is nearly 4 has only in the last few weeks started to poo in the potty or toilet, He has been doing wee’s for about 2 months before that… WE give him stickers on a chart and sing a little song and make a huge deal every time he does the right thing.. One day as he knows what money is I told him if he did a poo in the potty i would give him 20 cents… To my shock a light turn on in his brain and he has been doing poos in the potty even since… I have to keep a stash of 20 cent coins but its worth it.. We have saved more than that in nappies.. much more.. He now only wears a nappy to bed… It did take a few fails where he got it then after a couple of weeks kept wetting himself so we went back to nappies for a few weeks then started training agiain.. but so far it working this time…

  • While I don’t have any experience with children with Autism, this website has a lot of different strategies that may be of some assistance to you. Good luck on your potty training journey.

  • While I don’t have experience with autistic children, can I suggest you just put the potty out and occasionally place him on it. Make a big deal when he does go and maybe this will encourage him to go of his own accord.

  • That’s a tough one! I’ve never had any experience with autistic children so can’t offer any helpful tips. I’m sure the MoMs team will come up with sone suggestions son tho
