Hello!

My breast fed bub (8months) seems to be dairy intolerant (excema, gassy, explosive poos, spewy after feeds) so I cut dairy out of my diet (eg: substituting almond milk instead of full cream) except for the occasional slip up (we all have days where we NEED chocolate right?!) and he is doing 100% better. I know I’m a few months off yet, but how do I go about starting him on full cream cows milk if he’s intolerant?

I’ve read that I could start him on yogurt and cheese as the lactose in that is broken down further so less likely to affect him, but I would like to be able to give him full cream milk at some point.

Has anyone else been through this with their little one and how did you do it?

  • If your child is over the age of one, they can be given soy milk, calcium-enriched rice, and oat or nut milks. It is important to make sure they are getting enough calcium.

  • Can you feed it to him if he’s intolerant? Isn’t that a life long thing, lactose intolerance? I thought it was, not 100% sure though

  • You can buy formulas that are not dairy. When you baby is older you can intoduce lactose
free cheese, yoghurt, cream, icecream and custard -(all available in supermarkets). Some never overcome lactose intolerance. I have 2 nieces who are lactose intolerant. If she accidentally has even the smallest amount and it gives her stomach cramps and severe vomitting, sometimes resulting in dehydration as she then doesn’t retains sips of water either.

  • My bubs was also dairy intolerant but to the extent it gave her such bad colic that i had to stop BF at 5 months and put her on prescription formula. In saying that though she outgrew it around 18 months and was able to tolerate yoghurt & cheese. She is 4 now and can tolerate small amounts of dairy (icecream is her favourite of course) but can’t have too much full cream milk. I have gone with giving her rice milk or almond milk as a drink and dont worry too much as she is getting the calcium from other sources.
    Hope this helps
