Hello!

My son is nearly 3. He is showing no sign or interest in using a toilet. He was delayed with his talking (just started talking at 2.5years), now he is talking he is advanced for his age, but I can’t get him to show interest or try and use the toilet rather than nappies. I have bought him ‘cars’ undies (his favourite), new bright potty, tried him on the toilet, have bought stickers, given him a book to read while sitting on the toilet. He just shows absolutely no interest. My daughter was toilet trained completely by her second birthday and all of the above is how I managed to get her to use the toilet.

  • My daughter’s 3 in October. I tried everything as well – stickers, bribery, pretty undies. We tried running around with no pants on but she’d just hold it in. Then I left the potty in the lounge room for a few days and she woke up one morning and said she didn’t want to wear nappies anymore. That was 5 weeks ago and we haven’t looked back! She still wears one to bed or if we go out but don’t stress it will happen when he’s ready. Every child is different. My eldest son was so easy to potty train he pretty much picked it up as soon as we pulled the potty out. My second and third I thought they were0 going to start school wearing nappies they were so stubborn! He’ll go when he’s ready. Don’t stress just enjoy your time with your boy, they grow up too quickly.

  • Boys can be slower Ive heard. he needs to feel wet jocks to know the discomfort. if hes in a pull up. it absorbs and he cant learn aswell. Lots of visits to toilet. a lets go. notbwould you like to go? be kind but firm

  • Agree – slowly but surely he’ll get it. Keep persevering if he’s showing a positive reaction to you suggesting the potty.

  • Try putting the potty (on a towel) in the lounge room or wherever else he spends a good portion of his time during the day to start off with so that its easy for him to remember and he doesn’t have to leave his toys etc. Every so often sit him on it and make a big fuss when he goes. Soon it’ll just become second nature to him.

  • He will use it when he is ready they are all different..sounds like you are doing all the right things

  • I have just read a question on here about toilet training a 3 year old with autism.. I think you’ll be having a much easier time. Good luck with it all, it will cone to those who wait
