Hello!

Astigmatism of the eye basically means the cornea is misshapen, therefore everything appears blurry. I have the same condition and my 2 year old needs glasses.

Does anyone have any suggestions of how to encourage her to keep them on?

  • Go for a couple of light and flexible ones with a headband to keep it on place. Start with short periods of time and increase gradually over time. I had the same issue with my youngest who has Down syndrome. She has a bone-conductive hearing aid and would chuck it of all the time. She is 4years now and we’re finally getting there.

  • You need to buy one of those wetsuit loops that attach to the arms of the glasses… just persistence, keep it up mumma… you are doing a good job!!

  • Following this with interest. My just 4 year old needs glasses and I am wondering the same thing – I know it will be easier at 4 but I can still see them being taken off/dropped/left lying around!

  • My toddlers have a band on their glasses that keeps them on. One has had glasses since 13 months due to his eye sight luckily his twin did not need them until she was 18 months. They are now both use to them and love the fact they can see properly. The band on my daughter will have to be moved soon as her hair is catching in it but will use a chain on the glasses. Just make sure you have children frames as some adult frames are flimsy.

  • our little girl may require glasses (she’s 2.5). I spoke with a lady randomly in the shopping centre one day (did the old ‘excuse me but….’) and she said both her little boys had glasses from 18 and 20 months. One had also had a couple of ops on one eye. She said they’ve broken several pairs already but you can purchase ones that are hard to break and as long as the lens don’t break, you just have to buy new pairs. She said you can get ones that stretch and bend instead of being solid. It really made me feel more positive.

  • I would go for glasses with a band and then move to arms. If you wear glasses tell her lets put on our glasses for the day. It’s all about letter her realise that she see’s better with the glasses. Help her understand this by reading books and looking at different things with and without the glasses. Pick your timing though if she is not in the mood then wait for a better time. Most little ones love feeling important and special. Let her know her glasses are important and special and need to be looked after.

  • my 2 yr old has to wear glasses so we got her glasses forvher and the inwent and got some cheap funny glasses for the rest of the family to wear and now she keeps them on without any trouble and we dont have to wear ours this workngreat

  • i was going to suggest the strap thing. at least get a chain so she can’t just drop them off. Give her time to get used to them as well

  • i have a 2 year old that has had glasses since Christmas. I was worried about the same thing so when we picked glasses we got special glasses that have a band on the back to act as a way to keep them on. They also had an adaptive band so they were like goggles by the end of the 3rd week he was keeping them on so did not use the goggle band part.
Specsavers had them the arms can be removed and everything so my robust 2 year old could not break them and they stayed on his face
