  • I use the cook book that comes with my bread maker. Also, I use cookbooks when I am using the oven.

  • I’ve always been terrible at baking, so my top tip is to buy a second-hand bread-maker which can do all the work of preparing your dough then leave you to be creative in shaping into rolls/loaves – my favourite recipe is peanut-butter bread, but that’s no good for the diet :D

  • Our kids love helping to make bread so we do it by hand. We use a variety of recipes, Annabell Carmel has an easy cheesy bread roll recipe in one of her kids cook books. I also get a few from pinterest. Its great fun and not hard at all. Basically flour. water, yeast, salt and sugar.

  • I have a Panasonic Bread Maker. I buy a large bag of bread mix which also has the yeast separate, I just add the quantities of bread mix, yeast and water for the size of the loaf I want and let the Bread Maker work its magic. Never fails. Here’s a pic of what the large loaf looks like.


  • My sister in law has a breadmaker and all she buys are the ingredients . Makes it in the evening and wakes up to fresh bread in the morning . It does sound easy but buy the right breadmaker for yourself . Good luck.

  • I have made bread in my oven and now I make bread in the bread maker. I have a Breville bread maker and it came with a wonderful little recipe book.


  • In answer to your question Bela – Temperature is extremely important. If the dough rises at too high a temperature, the bread WILL taste yeasty. I just let my bowl of dough rise on the kitchen counter at room temperature. Also, be very accurate when you measure the yeast and sugar. Too much sugar will make the yeast grow too fast or too much, and that (or just too much yeast) will result in a dough with an unpleasant, yeasty taste. A too long a rising time can also cause a yeasty taste.


  • My favourite Homemade bread recipe is:
    Ingredients:
    • 2 cups warm water
    • 2 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast
    • 1/2 Tablespoon sugar
    • 1/4 cup melted butter
    • 1 Tablespoon salt
    • 1/4 cup sugar
    • 1/2 cup evaporated milk
    • 5-7 cups of bread flour, white or wheat will work too (can use more if needed)
    • 1 Tablespoon shortening (or butter)
    • 1 Tablespoon butter, melted (to top bread)
    Directions:
    1. Place the yeast and sugar in a small bowl. Pour the warm water (not too hot) over the yeast mixture and let it sit for about 10 minutes, or until nice and bubbly.
    2. Combine melted butter, sugar, evaporated milk and salt into a large mixing bowl. When your yeast mixture is ready add them together and mix.
    3. If you are using a stand mixer put on your bread hook and then pour in 3 cups of flour. If not you can stir/kneed it as well. Then add in 1 cup of flour at a time and mix. When you get to 5 cups of flour in the bowl, add in 1/2 cup more of flour at a time until the dough is no longer sticking to the sides. You’ll know it’s ready when your fingers no longer stick to the dough.
    4. Then cover the ball of dough and sides of the bowl with shortening and cover the bowl with a warm towel. Set by the window and allow it to rise (about 1.5 hours). When it has risen over the bowl punch it down and place on a floured surface.
    5. Knead the dough for 2-3 minutes.
    6. Cut dough into two pieces and roll them out into a rectangle. Roll the dough up and tuck the ends under. Then place into 2 greased bread pans.
    7. Let the bread rise again, and when it looks like a good loaf of bread place them in the oven at 375 degrees for 25 minutes. When the bread is done, coat the top with butter and remove onto a cooling rack.
