Hello!

My two year old was sent home from child care this week for biting another child. I would like to know what other mums would do in this circumstance.

  • I was told that sometimes kids just put things in their mouths and it’s automatic to bite down. I would agree with a firm “no biting” and removing them from the environment for a bit.

  • as soon as they bite, remove their mouth from you and tell them NO firmly. you can reinforce with -we don’t bite people etc.

  • It happened to my nephew once when he was about 2 in childcare and at that time he was always hyperactive and got bored easily . The mother didn’t know why it happened and he thought it was funny at the time . Once knew it was wrong , and discisplined he stopped the behaviour thank goodness . Maybe he doesn’t know other techniques and a lot of times they also may think it is funny , but as we know it isn’t .

  • My child went through a stage of biting but it was around the time I had my new baby so I think she was just after attention. Has there been any changes in your child’s life recently? I just kept saying to her “how would you like to be bitten? It would hurt wouldn’t it?” And then I would pretend to cry when she did it to me and send her to time out. Good luck xx
