Hello!

I used to wash fruit in water (especially if I was worried about germs from store handling etc.). If I was going to cook I thought the heat would kill germs. But I’ve recently heard that water is not enough. Pesticides etc. need a 10% salt solution. How do other people wash fruit/veg? And do you do it as soon as you get home before putting in storage/fridge, if so do you just leave to dry on counter top for 24 hours so as not to encourage mould?

  • Wash all your fruits and vegetables. According to the CSE, washing them with 2% of salt water will remove most of the contact pesticide residues that normally appear on the surface of the vegetables and fruits. Almost 75 to 80 percent of pesticide residues are removed by just cold water washing.


  • water is fine. the farmers would not use a pesticide on fruit and veg that was dangerous to consumers and requiring more than a water wash. since the emergence in trend for organic produce there has been a real increase in articles to sway people towards organic.


  • With veggies like pumpkin, carrots and potato, I sit them in some water in the sink to peel them. Other veggies I might give a quick rinse. I think the pesticides are absorbed into the product anyway, so washing won’t do much full stop


  • I do the apple cider vinegar treatment.


  • I just rinse with water, and drain with a colander. Never had a problem.


  • I put them straight into the sink with white and a capful of vinegar, while i unpack everything else, then i put them on paper towel to dry and then put away accordingly.


  • I fill a tub full of water and use a cap of white vinegar. It gets rid of any bugs that may be on lettuce or any other veggies and sterilises them.


  • In the past I didn’t even wash them a lot of the time (bad I know) but since having a baby I am more concerned and have started soaking in vinegar and water then drying on bench


  • Water and apple cider vinegar is the way to go!


  • I’ve always washed my fruit & veg under running water before eating/cooking. I prefer to fill a sink for washing lettuce & then drain in a colander.


  • Personally we cook most of our veg so I only give it a quick rinse under the tap. If I am cooking for Bub I just use the kettle water after it has cooled down. We usually purchase our veg from a local market not the supermarkets so a little more organic


  • If it’s something to peel, I don’t wash unless there’s thick coat of mud on skin.
    Otherwise, I fill up the small basin, wash and let stand for 5 minutes before I scoop them up to drip dry, then proceed to cook them.


  • i WASH IT WHEN READY TO USE IT A LOTS OF OUR VEG LIKE POTATOES CARROTS ETC WE PEEL ANY WAY TOO. iF i AM DOING JACKET POTATOES i SCRUB SKIN THOURGHLY, AS NOURISH MENT AND RUFFAGE IN SKIN


  • Nothing fancy here-just a quick wash under the tap


  • I just give a quick rinse under the tap – but must admit most vegies are home grown so I know there is no chemicals on them.
