Hello!

I am currently still breastfeeding my 10 month old son and am planning on weening him off the breast at 12 months.  I am feeling a bit daunted by the thought and was just wondering if anybody had any tips on how to wean and make the process smooth for me and bub! How do you wean a 12 month old?

  • Best way is to gradually reduce the amounts of feeds. Where possible, replace feeds with a solid food meal and have a new routine for night if you are feeding before sleep, like a bath and then a story read by someone else if possible so that bub isn’t reminded about what they’re missing. For me, the last feed to go was the morning feed when they woke up. This one is easy because you can just go straight away and make breakfast. You may find as well that bub will become more and more distracted when feeding and feed for shorter periods, this is a good thing and will help with the weaning process as it means they are becoming less reliant on you that way.

  • Great! Really very interesting comments on this!

  • Gradually cut feeds down. Try replacing some (maybe bedtime ones) with a bottle. Time and patience will get you thru

  • following. nearly 12 month old is a boobie monster

  • Make it a gradual and slow process for the sake of both of you.

  • I imagine all went well with the weaning

  • he shuold be almost 2 by now right?

  • i noticed this was posted last yr how did you go

  • Hope you managed to find the answer you were looking for.

  • Reduce a feed each week and eventually you’ll stop

  • How did you go with weaning?

  • Both of my children weaned themselves at a very young age. I hope you found the support you needed as it can be a very difficult thing.

  • I hope you managed to ween him without too much problem

  • I hope you did better than I did with my son, I planned to stop at 12 months, but ended up continuing until he was over 2 and a 1/2.

  • I slowly did it by taking a feed away each week, so eg. 4 feeds a day, next week 3 feeds a day, then next week 2 feeds a day, then next week 1 feed a day and then next weeks 1 feed every second day and then no feeds.
