Hello!

I’m not sure I make a very good housewife. My cleaning is more reactionary rather than maintaining a clean home. How do you work out when and how you will clean? Thanks :)

  • I think reactionary is fine. I like to deal with things as they come up and clean up spills etc. before they become a problem. I don’t see any harm in leaving stuff to tick on over if it is in ‘reasonable’ shape, but I guess you have to keep an eye on things (eg kitchen bin sometimes gets messy in a week, other times lasts ages before needing a thorough clean; but I wouldn’t make myself clean it every Tuesday just because).

  • Once a week I do the basics that need to be done to maintain hygiene: vacuuming, cleaning the bathrooms, changing the sheets, washing etc. The kitchen gets done every day. Other things – like dusting – get done when I notice they need doing.

  • Clean as you go, when you see somthing messy take care of it when you see it

  • I am a domestic cleaner so cleaning my house is the last thing I feel like doing when I have been doing it all week for others. I try to split the work up so it’s not done in one hit that way it’s not so overwhelming. Towels and bed linen changed one day. Toilets and bathrooms on a separate day. Vacuuming and mopping another day. Get kids getting involved by keeping their rooms clean and tidy helps. I find if you leave it too long things get really dirty and take even longer to clean.

  • When it looks like it needs cleaning or when I have energy.

  • I clean only when am.fed up with mess. Am too tired otherwise doing shift work and having a 5 and 9 year old.

  • I’ve been a bit lazy with housework. Just not having the motivation. Plus Netflix and kids have a huge impact on the housework that doesnt get done. However I’m going to start a housework schedule for day to day.
The things that get done daily is vacuum loungeroom and do the dishes.

  • I find having a bit of a routine for the regular stuff hels – eg bathroom on Tuesdays. I’m not super rigid, but I find a system helps stop anything getting out of hand.

  • I’m a bit like you, when it’s dirty, I’ll clean it. Probably not the best, but there’s just the 2 of us, so it works fir me

  • Also; getting everyone to help according to age and ability is a good idea too. Teaches good life skills.

  • I always clean the house on Wednesday. I generally dust and do windows and mirrors on Tuesday and on Wednesday I hoover, wash the floors, clean the bathrooms and kitchen. I see that that works with me. I then hoover every two days because of my dog. His fur is everywhere! During the week I clean as I go. I like to have everything in order in the house.
I do the washing machine between 2 and 4 times a week, and I don’t let ironing accumulate.
Regarding big chores, I try to do certain things at the start of each month. But there is always so much to do, that I should plan other chores too, otherwise I kind of forget them. :-)

  • If you’re getting done what needs to be done you’re doing a great job. If it really bothers you pick the big jobs and do them on a particular day so it becomes routine.

  • I use a planner and schedule in chores for every day of the week. It really does help with being organised and getting chores done. Bigger one off chores also get planned and written down for every quarter. I also set times for chores which again helps – time limiting is so important.

  • Good question. I tend to do housework when needed, e.g. washing when the hamper is full, dishes when they accumulate in the sink, cleaning when things look dirty. Sometimes I’ll get into a cleaning mood and do extra things like clean the range hood filters, wash curtains etc.
