Hello!

My mother in law gave me some eggs that her chickens have laid. How long do freshly laid eggs keep in the fridge? What is your experience?

  • the longest i have stored our chooks eggs in the fridge is for 10 days and they were still fine. but usually i try to make sure they are used in seven days

  • weeks – they are only off if they float in water

  • I think about 6-7 weeks. I ALWAYS TEST THEM BEFORE I USE THEM if they are that old.

  • I don’t put mine in the fridge either. We eat them faster than our hens can lay them.

  • Eggs keep for 6 weeks. So when you buy them from the supermarket, check the date carefully. Store them pointy end down.

  • I dont put my hen eggs in the fridge at all, i check for freshness by putting them in a sink of water, if they float they are bad, sink they are good and if they stand on their end they are almost bad but still useable.

  • I too have fresh farm eggs from a work mate, and they last so long – just put them in water if they are months old, and if they float, throw them out, otherwise all good

  • You can easily test them for freshness by seeing if they sink or float in water- if they float they are stale eggs with big air sack

  • 45 days is the guideline.

Mark the date on the egg carton if you’re prone to bouts of forgetfulness like me ;)

If it gets close to the 45 days, check their freshness.

  • I am not sure but i normally keep them for a month because we normaly eat them so quickly anyway :)

  • We keep fresh eggs for up to 3 months or more. We only keep them in the fridge if the weather is warmer and havnt had any trouble. (including eggs that sometimes have a tiny speck in them as they have been fertalised) Just crack them into a cup first and give them a sniff to make sure.
Also, dont judge and egg by the colour of its yolk, some of my chooks produce dark yellow/orange yolks while others produce pale yellow color yolks.
and also the ‘float/sink test’ is also rubbish. as i have days old eggs that both sink and float. Just go on smell :)

  • Fresh eggs can be kept refrigerated in their carton for up to 6 weeks, there is a use by date displayed on the carton as well. It is best to put eggs in the fridge as soon as you get them home. I took advice from the NSW Egg Board. I like to use my eggs at room temp so I take out what I need and place in a bowl until I am ready.

  • I have chickens and have eaten them up to 6 weeks with no problems. Just crack them and smell or put them in water first to see what they do.

  • I don’t put my eggs in the fridge (I have chickens) because they are fresh, so there is no need.

When you consider that some shop bought eggs are in storage for several weeks before they even reach the shelves, you will be keeping the eggs for a couple of months, maybe even more.

  • I keep them for ages and just crack them into a cup first to check.
