Hello!

I have an almost two year old and I am unsure how to let him know his grandmother is passing away. I want to be honest. Any tips on how to handle the situation?

  • He’s only 2 so he’s not going to comprehend much about the situation. Give him the basic facts, keep it simple and answer any questions he may ask along the way

  • This is a hard one – for you and bub… I lay on the trampoline and looked up at the brightest star in the sky and said that is Grandad

  • We are yet to experience this as my grandparents died before my kids were born. I guess it just has to be done in a way that the child understands that unfortunately this is a part of life

  • Be honest
Let your child now that there grandparent is not well
And they are going to heaven to watch over you from the sky
Talk about all the fun times you have had with them
And that if you can buy a tree/plant that they can have to remember the grandparents
A special type like a nice rose or oak depends how much room you have.
Don’t hide the fact as they will sense something is happening and going on

  • I told my kids that when people get sick and pass away they go to heaven but we can’t talk to them as they don’t have any phones

  • This would be so sad, I guess you could possibly find some books to help, I guess just saying that Grandmother is going away to a place where it is always happy and sunny with no pain? Gee I cannot even bear to think of this :(

  • Would love to know what you did, its a difficult one depending on age

  • sorry to hear, what did you end up saying

  • there are some good comments here

  • this is really a sad thing to do. Our son at just 5, dearly loved his grandmother. We thought it best to tell him gently that grandma got very sick and died. Our son amazed us by wanting to ring up his aunt and uncle and tell them himself as he felt responsible for grandma. I will never forget the maturity and love he had for her.

  • Tell the truth, explain it slowly but say that “you still have your mum and dad with you”. It is a difficult subject.

  • How did you go with telling him?

  • god has chosen a special person or angel to be with him and he will always be watching you from heaven……my children didnt go to the funeral, i didnt think they were old enough..but they came to the “party” afterwards.

  • Im sorry that your family is going through a tough time. Maybe tell your son that grandma is going to heaven, and give him a special photo of her so if he needs to talk to her he can physically see her.

  • So sorry to hear that :(
